455 is alive!!!
Dudes,
I just fired up my new 455 in my 71 Lemans convert! Awesome sound! oil pressure 55psi and holding Temp crept up to 205 after about 15 mins at 2500 rpms. I shut 'er down and I'll run it some more tomorrow. My engine, .030 over has the #15 heads, stock HEI with the RAIII cam and RA exhaust out to a set of Flowbies. I will be putting in the full PYPES Xpipe setup on this week. My question is how long and what RPM for proper cam breakin? I gleaned a ton of info regarding the exhaust and HEI setup off this board, many thanks to all contributors, it's like the PONTIAC library of congress with the loads of good info/pics regarding PONCHOS. Congrats, got to love a newborn 455!! For cam break-in I run 2000 rpm's for 20 min. so I think your about done. Take it for a spin and enjoy!! I usually do an oil and filter change after about 50mi. everyone has there own break-in ritual. Have fun.

Cam is usually broken in with 20 mins. at 1800-2200rpm, then oil+filter change. After 100 or so miles change oil+filter again (vary rpms, nothing constant, to break in rings). Engine should free up and cool down after about 500 miles. Remember to use GM EOS and rotella 15-40 (or equivelent)for best cam and bearing protection.

Change the oil with either VR1 or Rotella. VR1 preferred. Add EOS and run it for another 15 mins @ 2000+ rpm. I would change it one more time and then drive it as Billit suggests for a couple hundred miles. I wouldn't baby it but no blast to the redline either for the first hundred miles or so.

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. Secondly where do I a find Rotella and GM EOS? I figure the Rotella is in the dairy section at NAPA but I have no idea where to find the EOS. I presume it is an additive offered at the dealers service dept? The engine runs smooth and sounds great after 20-25 mins at 2K and I dropped a little knowledge off to my 13 year old son. He helped alot with the re-assembly and seemed genuinely interested. I overheard him bragging to his buds about it as well, so I think the flame is flickering. Hopefully he'll drive a classic Pontiac someday instead of an import with a goofy wing on the back. Thanks again for all the info, much appreciated. ITO
