Default ‘67 Harmonic Balancer with ‘68 timing cover

I installed a ‘77 engine into our ‘67 LeMans. After all of the work required, I didn’t want to fool around with the timing cover and water pump, etc. I put the engine at TDC before installing, then switched out the balancer. I needed the ‘67 balancer to go with all of the pulleys to drive the AC, etc. Are the timing marks in the same place on both balancers? After switching them out, the mark in the ‘67 seemed off a bit. Of course, it could have moved a bit while I was doing the work. I can see that the balancer is too small to reach the timing marks on the cover, but I’m sure that I can work that out.

Looking good in the Canada neighborhood, bet you are glad to be making progress!!!

I'm (only) guessing you are OK on this issue. The marker on the cover looks to be in same place as the newer stuff.

Because the diameter of the '67 balancer is smaller, the 68-newer pointer will be off a few degrees. Unless it's a stock-appearing resto, I always use the '68 newer balancer and 11 bolt water pump, they're so much better. Depending on the timing cover you're using, you'd have to source the correct 68 or 69-70 4-bolt crank pulley and WP pulley. With the correct pulleys, the '67 accys can line up without spacers or cobbling it up.

3 ways to solve:

Run current '67-68 AC app wp pulley, & a NICE cast impeller 8 bolt water pump, along with quality new '68+ damper, nice used '68 timing cover, & '842 & 843 crank pulley. Most likely the most affordable route!

Run nice 11 bolt timing cover, '68+ quality new damper, short cast impeller '69 mode 11 bolt wp (buy new from Ames).
Then install '69 AC appl wp pulley, believe an '061 (can ck the pulley rack). Combine w above AC application crank pulleys.

Last....run nice 11 bolt timing cover, '68+ quality new damper, TALL cast impeller 11 bolt wp. There are two possible AC wp pulleys. Combines w above AC application crank pulleys. Over the last 30 years have put a together over 140 of the tall 11 bolt wp changeovers. As correct AC diam pulleys are not reproduced, they are tough to find in nice shaoe. For the last 6 years have only offered this last option as complete changeovers.

FWIW, with an 8 bolt water pump and a 70s smog era tiny dampener, TDC is about 4 degrees advanced. I did the piston stop check to verify TDC.

Balancers always seem to make things interesting. I purchased an ATI damper with a 7.074” diameter. The balancer called for a “3 bolt Chevy style pulley”. So I sourced a TransDapt 7.3” two groove pulley with the 3 bolt pattern and thought I had it made - but no not yet. The center of the pulley didn’t clear the ATI damper hub. Trip to a local machine shop to open up the center of the pulley from 1” to 2.5”. Now the new damper fits great and the pulleys line up precisely. It’s only some head scratching, time and money.

So I'm going to switch everything over, balancer and pulley wise, to suit the 11 bolt timing cover that's on our newly installed engine. I hate the fact that I can't get an acurate timing indication with the wrong '67 balancer installed now. I'm fortunate in that I found some of the needed pulleys amongst the huge cache of parts that came in the trunk of the car. I have the crank pulley, the AC pulley that goes behind it, and the 6" A/C water pump pulley. Also a balancer that's in great shape. I'm feeling pretty lucky.
So the only two pulleys that are left to deal with, are the ones that occur on the alternator and the PS pump. I've searched but haven't seen the setup for a '68 and up ALT/PS setup. Any information would be helpful. I figure that they different due to the 4 1/2" deep WP?

I suggest

your using the 67 power steering pump n brackets
And using the 70’s timing cover you’ll be better off with 69-70 crank n water pump pulleys

9799128
9790842-3.

Then you can use your 67 6901 ps pulley

Ya, the engine is running great and the whole thing is almost back together. I'm just waiting on the throttle arm that mounts to the carb. I've got nothing to connect the throttle cable to until it shows up. The car never had an original Pontiac Quadrajet on it until now. As soon as it gets on, we're driving.

After switching out to the later balancer and crank pulleys, I found that they wound up right in the same place as the '67 pulleys, in relation to the timing cover. So that worked out great with the existing AC, PS and ALT pulleys. But the WP pulley is still 1/2" proud of everything. It looks exactly like this condition that they show on Butler's site. The listing is for a pulley that will mitigate the problem.

https://butlerperformance.com/i-2468...l%3Fq%3Dpulley

The WP pulley I have is a 481040. I see that it's for a '71 and up, which I figured would align with the 4 1/2" deep water pump. But it appears that the pulley I need must be 3" deep. So I guess that I can get the one that Butler sells, unless anyone has a sugestion for a factory part number that I can google. With exchange, shipping, and sales tax, the Butler one will cost me well over 200.00.
