SD Performance Still Open?
Hi there. Has anybody dealt with SD Performance recently? I am trying to purchase a set of heads and camshaft from them and have left a couple of voicemails and emails with no luck. I just am hoping that Dave is still in business! Thanks.

Plenty of other Pontiacs guys that will do as good or better than SD and answer the phone. Lile Paul K here on the board. But yes SD is still in business but really hard to get a hold of from what I've been told

A friend of mine just emailed SD the other day to inquire about heads. He got right back to him. Within an hour.

I had sent him numerous emails and calls last Dec. Never heard back from him.

I emailed them years ago and it went into their spam/ junk mail folder. They found my message when cleaning their folder out and called me back.

Keep in mind that this is the holiday season and many businesses shut down for a week or two. Keep trying and have some patience, I’m sure you’re going to be quite satisfied with Dave’s products once you receive them.

I've emailed this guy repeatedly, never a reply. I guess he didn't want my $$$. I emailed Jeff Kauffman, got a hold of him right away. I bought my complete long block from him. I couldn't be happier

SD no longer does shortblock work, just head related to focus his business. I got a set of new Eheads with the heart shaped chamber last years. CNC ported to flow 338 cfm, worth the wait.

I had trouble getting a hold of him a few years back so it's been an on going question by many for a long time.
Pretty sure when he left California and went back to Canada, he reduced staff and it was pretty much just him and his wife, so customer contact kind of fell off from that point on. Nice fella when you can get a hold of him but I've kept my business state side since, so no recent experience with him. |

It's like lottery odds with him. If you're lucky enough to win, you're very happy. I wanted a stump puller cam in the worst way. I tried for months to get ahold of him with no luck. Bought from someone else.

I really don't understand the fixation with SD, like i posted in post#2 there are quite a few other guys that can get you want you want and then some and there is zero hassle getting in touch with them. But i guess to some the hassle is worth it dealing with SD?

I suspect some might think his custom cams with gitchy names can only be bought thru him, unknowing they can be had at many sources. That said, because Dave might order them in numbers his price might be a bit lower than ordering the same lobes at another source. Just a guess on my part.

I thought I posted to this yesterday???
I communicated with Dave a few days ago, and he is working full-speed. Dave got pretty sick, several weeks ago, though. He is pretty much a one-man show right now, in the shop. He ended up having to take about a week off work, while sick, and has been working hard to get caught back up. I can tell you that his current turn-around time is about 4 months. As to why people want to use him, for me it is that he provides a consistent & high quality product. I know what to expect when Dave provides the heads for a project.

I have always been flexible with Dave.
He has had my stuff for a while and yet I never complain as it would be the wrong thing to do. He is helping me on my Engine project. I would bet that he has had my stuff longer than anyone on this board. When it gets here I will be happy. One man shop and sickness are a rough road to travel. Doubt if he has time to read PY but Get Well Dave! and Merry Christmas! Tom V.

This is a small hobby. SD has a great reputation and shares a lot of great tech info via their website. I have purchased from them and would do so again. That said, nothing wrong with going elsewhere if their timeline is incompatible with your needs.

And who else has all the CNC programs for the iron heads ? My 48s had every surface milled to a mirror like finish. Went 272cfm. SD had big plans for awhile until the landslide. It almost did them in. Bunch of different CNC programs when Marcell was there, dyno mule and all that. Thing is, Dave told me there is a lot more money in 500-600HP street strip engines than full race engines. Just not enough of them and plenty of guys that want street power. But they were the first one with the 340-350 cfm std port E head. Remember when Ken Brewer had the second gen firebird drag car with a 400 ? Went 9.30 with sand rolled E heads by Dave that went 290cfm, Warrior by Gabby . I just think that little 400 was so impressive. How many guys ran those times with a 505-535 ? Some of you guys get off Dave. He is great. |

^ +2 Dave did my heads for my recent build, and gave me a lot of sound and proven advice to achieve what i was trying to do. The advice in itself was worth a ton! He had my heads for quite a while, but well worth the wait. Being CNC ported, his results are repeatable, which was a selling point for me. People these days don't seem to have the patience to wait for something, and if you don't go elsewhere. He isn't promising something next week and delivering months later. He was up front with me on the time frame, and did miss it by a few weeks, but people should understand that it is a one man show, and sometimes life does get in the way of the best intentions. Price, quality of work and attention to detail. He was well worth the wait. Voicemail is an option too.
