Dick!!??

No kidding!!?? I didn't even think about buying R12 in the 12oz cans on Ebay. I was bringing home a case or 2 everytime I went to Tijuana when we'd go to the Ensenada beach for the day. I'll have to check that out.

We were charging about $150 for a conversion with fittings and ester oil. But now that R134a had gone thru the roof, we've gone to about $250. Used to buy a 30lb cylinder for $89 at Costco, now it's around $300 a 30lb cylinder. Just like R12 used to cost way back when.

I understand what you are saying about how the govt sticks their noses in our business. But I totally agree with the whole licensing thing and freon. R12 is ozone depleting and R134a is cancer causing. Take your pick. Now their saying that R134a is also dangerous to the ozone. Look to see new refrigerants down the road again.

Keeping the environment healthy is a good thing... but I can totally relate to when the environmentalists go overboard. In Los Angeles... we've ranked #1 for many years in having the worst air in the country. My dad can't live here because he has heart problems, so he lives in Nevada. The particulate matter in the air here kills people that aren't healthy. One of the reasons why I've been thinking about Washington or Oregon lately. I miss the Fresh air we used to have here at one time.

Default Adjusting POA

Guys,

I'm no expert on this topic by any means (will need to perform the conversion in about 3 months, as my whole GTO is being rebuilt from the FW forward).

But anyway, there is a lot of information on adjusting the original POA valves on this web site:

http://www.autoacforum.com

In particular:

I sent mine in to old air to be adjusted for 134a. The rest of my system is brand new. I'll post the results when I get it back. They supposedly set them for 20#'s.

Well I think that I am going to go with the r12, does any one know if these a/c systems came with an small screen (pencil size), in any of the lines. I will repalce the compressor and drier. Any other suggestions of what else I should change. Now after I replace these parts, could I change my mind and go with 134? And what does the POA valve look like?

R12 can be bought on EBay for $15 to $20 a can all day....even less if you are a good sniper.

Default Oil for R-12

May be JSAauto can help me ?

On my 69 GTO a/c system....
I have replaced my receiver/dryer, muffler, condensor and all a/c lines. Rebuilt compressor also. The system always ran on R12 before, but has not been used for 4 years.
I have enough r12 from a friend to re-charge the system.

Wondering what type of oil to use for my r12 system and how much oil to put in system ?

Do you have a specific manufacter name for oil or specific type ?

Thanx Dave

BVA oils

http://www.bvaoils.com/autoproductinfo.htm

BVA Auto 100 is for either R12 or 134.
BVM 100N is the typical mineral oil for R12 only.

I used to have a link to a page that showed capacities, but it doesn't work anymore. Might want to try an auto a/c forum or service manual.
