Default SD distributor

Picked this up today from a Pontiac buddy who is selling off some parts he didn’t need. I know there’s good SD knowledge on this forum. Did they batch build these or are there multiple date codes for ‘73? This distributor came from a ‘73 SD that was totaled decades ago and then parted out.

Yes from what I’ve seen they were built in batches , I’ve seen a couple date codes. That’s a nice piece

Default Most SD455 engine parts were built in batches. Same with the Ram Air II parts.

We've only seen a few date codes on things like carburetors, distributors, exhaust manifolds and heads. Same with the blocks.

With the really limited production stuff like this, there is normally a larger 'acceptable' lag between production date code and build dates. It's expected.

I suspect with the SD455 parts, the performance-guys at Pontiac were hurrying to get parts built and squirreled away before the GM brass slammed the door on them.

Thank goodness!

Can't really remember how to read date codes on distributors. Here are a couple of photos of the distributor out of my '73.

Default Very late 1972 built distributor

Decodes as 2 = 1972, L = December, 28 = 28th day.

It was a Thursday, in case you wondered.

Diane Keaton was a guest on Johnny Carson.

And Kim Il-song became president of North Korea.
