Hi,
Right now I have a 69 400 with #17 heads off my old engine. I wanted to get some better heads, for better performance. I found someone who is selling 7k3's and 46's (a 1969 head). Can you guys help me decide if I should get one of these. Thanks, john |

John, as always what heads to use are going to depend upon your budget and goals, so we probably would need to know what you plan on doing with the motor. The 7K3 heads (2.11 intake & 1.77 exh) are 96cc and on a .030 over, zero decked 400 they would yield about 8.5:1 CR.
The only 46 heads that I know of are from a 74 350 GTO (not 1969 as you stated) which have the smaller int & exh valves at 1.96 and 1.66 respectively). They are 86cc heads and would be about 9.2:1 on same motor as I just mentioned. Either the 7K3 or 46 should be good for pump gas, but I've never heard of a 17 head... anybody else? Before we go on lets hear about what you really want with this and I'm sure the guys on here will have suggestions. Later, Kevin F. Go with the 7K3 heads. They have the big valves. The compression with flat tops will
allow you to run pump gas with no detonation problems. The only problem is the lack of bolt holes on the ends of the heads for exaust. If you are not running headers. The regular exaust manifolds work just fine. I prefer these heads because they are the same as the 71 96 heads and are priced cheeper.

The 17 casting head is a small valve, low compression (8.6-1) head for the 265 horse 350 in 1968

The 1969 46 heads are off a 2 bbl 428 engine and have around 75cc chambers.

Right now I doubt I will bore the engine or zero deck it. The 7k3's sound good because of the big valves. If I put them on the 400 will I have any problems? As of now I have no headers, I might put some on down the road though.

If you think you will ever add headers to your combo I would have the other mounting holes drilled and tapped by a machinest when you get your valve job done as without them you couldn't use headers.

If you get those 7K3's milled .060" on the deck and intake side they will yield just under 9:1 compression on a stock bore block. Bore the block +.030 and zero deck it and you've got right about 9.3:1. Go for the flow, the compression ratio isn't as important.
