1970-1972 Gto 2 different Dash vent sizes?
Hoping someone could shed a little light on this subject. I am reading that there are two different size dash vent bezels offered for these cars.
A "wide base" and a "narrow base" bezel. Since I am completely lost on this can anyone explain to me the TECHNICAL difference between the two and how to tell which vents I need to order for my 1970 GTO? My car had a Tempest Dash installed by the previous owner. (Don't ask!) I since removed it and bought a nice driver quality GTO dash to replace it with. Unfortunately it got the bare dash with no vents or bezels. So I have nothing to compare it to. Pictures would be great if anyone has them to compare the 2 different size bezels. |

Both OPG and THEPARTSPPLACE have listings for wide and narrow vents.

Can't remember running across the wide & narrow outer vent frame deal. Have before sent pairs of outer vent frames off to be restored /revaccum metalized & painted but they always were out of the same original dash. Need to pay better attention as I strip several remaining dashes down to cores. Am networking to get several dash cores to El Paso.

I guess until they are side by side 95% of us would never notice. |

I bought mine from our sponsor, no problems. Ames does list 2 different part numbers for 70 - 72 left and right which is what i ordered.

Wish I still had mine out so I could show you. I ordered one of each. One base (vent frame) is slightly wider than the other. Something you really wouldn’t even notice unless you’re an engineer or really technical. I read that material saying which year had which one and which side went where and, the disclaimer that factory cars all over the country had every mix of bases imaginable. And, you can’t tell which is which, once installed. Unless you previously measured and marked your setback. The difference is “Nominal”. And if I someone sneaked over and swapped mine side to side, I’d likely never know it. As I understand it there are no hard rules on this item. Too many real dragons to slay. Step around this one.

I was looking at some catalogs and AMES says the one side is taller than the other. That's the difference?

Funny that this thread popped up….I just pulled my 71 dash yesterday and also noticed the differences between the left and right vent bezels. Here’s some pics of left and right vents. Left side bezel is 1/4” taller than right. Width is the same, top and bottom clip design is different. Part no. 9782505 only on smaller right side bezel. The vent mechanisms that clip into the bezels appear to be the same for both sides.
