Default Hood Tach ?

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at a Hood Tach out here for sale and the needle is sitting on about 6,000rpm.
It is brand new, purchased from Ames last year. I was just a bit worried if something was wrong with it.

Anyone know why the needle isn't at zero? What about the quality of the Ames supplied units? I just get a little hesitant when someone goes to the trouble of importing something then sells it "unused". I don't really need it (just yet), but if the price is right!

Thanks, Steve.

I got mine from Original Parts Group and never had any problems with it. I would be very hesitent about buying one that won't go to 0.

Last moment when previous owner put it on,as he over-revved his engine, and blew it when he reached 6000 RPM...

Thanks Terry and Rob. It just sold for $204, someone else can worry about it now. That's two I've seen and passed on out here now.

Am I safe to assume that all new Hood Tachs come with the needle sitting on zero out of the box? Do they return to zero, or do they stay at the revs they're on when you turn the ignition off?

Just for the record Rob, it was actually on 7000rpm!

i've never shut it off at higher rpm...i wonder...i'm gonna go see what happens.........
.....ok i shut it off at 2500. the needle dropped to 1000. then went to zero when i turned the key again.

Many GM factory tachs go up to about 1000 rpms when turning the key off then will go to zero with the key on.
