73 REAR SPOILER
What do you think? Yes or No to the Formula X car's rear spoiler. Was thinking of building one.

It's "Okay" on the '73. I much prefer the way the ducktail worked on the '77 Can Am rear styling.

Although it's interesting IMO the 73 has a clean style. I was thinking of building one for my Grand Am back in the 70s. Glad it didn't happen. They look great without.

Cool looking car - that should have been built.

I think yes. But, I think it could be done better than they did on the Formula X car. Looks too small as it is. Needs to be redesigned to be further up the trunklid, with more height, so it's more similar in proportion to the Can Am.

Lower valence air scoop is nice.

Both front and rear spoilers are very cool and look great.
Too bad they never made it to production.

73 rear spoiler
I would purchase the front air dam and side air deflectors along with the rear spoiler, if they were produced. Always liked that black Grand Am......

Hey what's the story on the black Grand Am? Never seen that before.

Seems like Pontiac had some great ideas for the 73 A-body line up, it's a shame none of them made it into production. I think some of these could have made a great impact on sales for the 73 Lemans and Grand Am's . Don't see many if any concepts from the other 3 makes of A-body's.

Of course, many of the formula X ideas did show up, on the 77 Can Am. Better late than never .

The car was basically a stock 455 coupe. The mods were cosmetic. The chrome fender trim was removed, The rear spoiler and Trans Am look front air dam and fender defectors were made up out of fiberglass. The rear bumper was chrome stripped and painted body color. A set of gold steel wheels with a fender lip hugging offsets were shod with big and little tires gave it a rake. To finish it off, the hood got painted with the big gold 455 and surrounded by gold pinstripes along with the tops of the wheel openings. My father saw that car in the magazine and tried to find who made the spoilers to no avail. However, he did have the rear bumper on his 73 Florentine Red 455 stripped and color matched. It looked really nice. On my 73 I am going to also color match ther rear bumper and also tuck it closer to the body for a cleaner look. If you decide to duplicate the rear spoiler on the Black car I would be interested in purchasing one from you. "73 for me" Last edited by 73 for me; 02-20-2017 at 01:34 PM. |

I would duplicate the rear spoiler on the black car. The back edge of the spoiler comes up vertically rather than tilting towards the back window like on the white car. It looks way more agressive this way.

On my third design now, the first one had too much of a upward arch , second one more upright but still too much of a flip upwards. Third one has more of an angle towards the the front and a flatter arch . A cross between the two designs from the formula -x and the black grand am. Who knows where it will go maybe third time the charm. Very hesitant about drilling holes in the quarters and trunk and then not really like it.

Although both look pretty much the same from the pictures. I wonder if Herb Adams had anything to do with the design and shape, because of his nascar grand am .

3d printer
On the history channel did you see how they designed a new rear spoiler from a 3d printer? Think it was made for a Camaro in 3 sections. When put together their design looked OEM.
