Default Accelerator cable direct replacement

Accelerator cable snapped at the gas pedal this weekend (that was fun).

I tried to find a direct replacement on line to match up to what I have, but the on I ordered doesn't match at all. (See OER part #9792222 attached photo) but I missed the fine print for 2V only. Different type of mounting tabs and not quite the same length.

I since found that Ames lists specific 68 4v part ( FN377). Does anyone have experience with this one? Is it a drop in replacement or do I just need to get a generic cable, re-use the old sleeve and cut to fit? Also, not clear from catalog photos is it should be FN377 or FN377F??

The part you got looks like mine, 1969 Firebird 4bbl.

That bracket looks like a 1972 and up A body one to me. I would use the Ames 68-69 F body 4 barrel cable and buy the correct 1968 bracket if it was my choice.

A Schab; You were right on the money.

Called Ames and went over their catalog with tech support. My bracket is a '72 as you pointed out. My cable sleeve wasn't correct either.
Ordered up the right cable and bracket.

Should get back on the road in no time.

Thank you!

Wayne

Can you post up pics of the results? I've been drawing a blank on where to mount a kickdown cable bracket on my 68, due to the throttle cable design. Everyone with a 2nd gen gets to run down to any parts store, buy a $10 chrome universal bracket, and be on the road in 10 mins! I just can't see how to make something work...

What transmission are you using ? The 2 speed auto and th 400 use an electrical kickdown switch. If you happen to have a th 350 you will need the 1969 F-4 bracket that has the provision for the cable and the correct cable.

Yes, the TH350 equipped cars use a bracket that accepts a plastic clip on the kickdown CABLE. It has a square opening that the clip snaps into and this bracket mounts near the rear driver side of the intake and carb.,

The TH-400 ONLY has the mount for the the throttle cable to get clamped into.
Here's a pic of the TH350 bracket.

That picture is for a second gen th 350. I thought we were dealing with a first gen.My mistake, sorry. The F4 bracket is one piece 1969 only part that has the square hole fore a 4 barrel with a th 350 cable.

That last picture is not a 68/69 style. It most likely is mid to late 70's,maybe even early 80's 301.

Yes, you are right now that I look at it, it has an HEI.. I can't help at all...
I'll leave with this note. The main difference is - if the OP has a TH350, he needs the Square bracket for the plastic collar on the kickdown cable to snap into, as you described. right? Similar to the bracket in that pic above. If he has a TH400, he only needs, or only has now, the throttle cable bracket.
I had one on my 75 Formula before I put the 455 th400 in it. I have it still. I tried modify it to work with the TH400 and it was not going to work.
I'm out!

Wanted to provide an update:

I received and installed the 'correct' 68 throttle cable and 68 bracket from Ames..
See attached.
Note: there is an existing aftermarket kick down switch.
Everything mounted ok (now the coil bracket/nut is very tight behind the throttle bracket. In the photo the coil had not been mounted yet).
The issue now is I do not get full opening of the carb with the gas pedal. It's coming up about 3/8" short of hitting the kick down switch so not quite full throttle.

There seems to be a slight bit of play at the mounting point at the gas pedal. What are the recommendations for adjusting this and taking up the slack so as to get full travel/throttle?

If your 68 is the same as my 69, I had to wait until I pulled the engine to replace the worn out bushings for my gas pedal. But I didn't have just a slight bit of play, I had a lot. Originally, I tried to bend the shaft for the gas pedal out, but it eventually returned to where it was before. I do remember reading a post somewhere on this forum, where a guy bent the shaft out and welded on a rod to prevent it from going back.
