POCI Convention Required Fire Extinguisher
Do any of you know the rating required? I believe it is 10BC, but is a 1;A;10BC OK, too?
How about vendors? I'd like to buy five or more of the correct extinguishers.

POCI requirement...
1-A:10BC is listed as the accepted requirement. Translated: the 1 = the equivalent of 1.25 gal. of water of water; A is water; 10 = 10 sq. ft. of coverage; and B/C are types of combustibles involved. Much preferring Halon, I have never been turned away from parking on a POCI show-field or having my cars judged @ national POCI Conventions with my 5# halon extinguisher on display.

I have been going to shows for over 45 years ,over 15 with a car of my own, and have NEVER seen anyone ask to see a Fire extinguisher.

Been to a POCI show?
The extinguisher had to be visible in the car when I went. (think it might have been checked when they were parking you in space?)

I have, many times at many shows. It's pretty funny when you pull in with a Fiero, they figure it is standard equipment.

I'm surprised some of you haven't been asked for an extinguisher at a POCI event. I didn't know about the requirement until 2012 at St. Charles, when I had to scramble to buy one in order to show my GTO. Also, in 2013, at Dayton, every car had to have an extinguisher to register.
It's a very good rule based on some of the tragedies I've seen!

Anyone ever see a 40 year old starter catch fire? My last 72 bird was saved by my garage extinguisher. Might have lost house if it got out of hand. Was lucky I saw fire down low, and had coincidently opened hood. They really should be mandatory on board units.

From the POCI 2018 Judging Manual--not sure if this was also required in 2017 and earlier years:
B. Fire Extinguisher No vehicle is allowed onto the show field without an approved, charged and functional fire extinguisher. The minimum requirement is a U/L 10-B:C fire extinguisher. The 10-B:C dry chemical or the SS-45 2-liter AFFF Foam Extinguisher is preferred, but 10-B:C (5#) Halon or (10#) Halotron is acceptable. The fire extinguisher need not be permanently mounted, but must be clearly visible and readily available. It is unethical and illegal to “borrow” an extinguisher from another car participant temporarily, thereby placing that participant in non-compliance. Any vehicle observed in violation of this rule will be immediately disqualified and removed from the show field at once! THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE OF THE EVENT, AND COMPLIANCE IS MANDATORY! 1. See APPENDIX–XX USING FIRE EXTINGUISHER for types of fire extinguishers and proper use when using a fire extinguisher to fight a fire. |

Any and all shows I've been too due require a fire extinguisher. They don't always check but it is required. Some even make you set in front of a front tire so it can be seen and easy to get to.
Halon is the best to carry as wheelspin says. And I agree.... no mess to clean up other than what did catch fire. I even used to sell them back in the 70s.

Just go to K-Mart, pick up a cheapy and throw it in the car for the day if you do not like the rule. Geez, there are people that will spend $700.00 for a shift knob and then there are those that will bitch about a $25.00 safety item.

The host clubs are planning on having some on hand for purchase during the Convention.

Can you still buy Halon extinguishers? I thought they were outlawed awhile back, or maybe that's just for data centers...?

No more new Halon extinguishers for sale...
I was referring to an older Halon model that is still good. You are right, Halotron replaced Halon foe safety reasons around 10 yrs. ago.

True. No Halon extinguishers are sold now. You could/can suffocate in an enclosed as Halon displaces the air to put out a fire. You cannot see it when used, but it has a orange smell to it... at least what we sold did.

POCI has required fire extinguishers at the national convention for as long as I can remember. I know I had to have one when I attended the 2001 convention.
