Other than Larry's 73 Super Duty, does anyone have any details on the power sunroof's available on early 2nd gen f-bodies? Production numbers? Costs? Where installed?

How rare an item are they?

I don't have any numbers as to how many, but I do believe they are pretty rare. I believe the cars were shipped to ASC for installation. These were a lot more popular on the MoPaR's of that time, but still very rare over all. I can't find any pricing info in my dealer album's pricing section for the Firebirds, but under the Grand Prix section it shows the option "Sunroof Electric" for $325 for Sales Code 571 and UPC Code C03.

I have two friends who both own ASC sunroofed cars. I've always wondered just how rare they are. One is a 74 T/A, and I believe the other is a 74 T/A also, but I can't be 100% on that.

Back in 2004, I looked at a rusty white 72 T/A that had the ASC sunroof with the glass center section instead of the body colored one. The glass was cracked and the seller/owner optimistically said that the glass was easy to get a replacement for...any glass shop can do it. Yeah right, pal.

Car was missing its original drivetrain and was too far gone to bother with so I passed on it. It was in Connecticut.

I have a fairly extensive collection of factory (and non factory literature) on Pontiacs of this era and don't recall seeing anything on factory installed sunroofs in Firebirds prior to mid year 76 Hurst Hatches on the 50th anniversary L/E T/A's...

They were reasonably common in 73-77 A bodys....

Earlier this year,HPP did a feature/cover on a Martinique Blue 78 with an ASC sun roof...

I believe Jim Mattison comments on the dealer install vs. the kid with a sawzall at the stereo shop installing them...

I owned a 74 t/a 455 auto with courderoy (don't think I spelled that correctly) interior. it had an electric sunroof with the glass version. it definitely wasn't on the phs sheet. it was very nicely done but I just assumed it was put in some years down the road. I never gave it a thought about being a dealer installed item.

I have never seen an ASC car that had headliner "bows". This means all I have seen or known were mid spring '73 and forward cars. I would love to see how they managed the interior on that 72 Steve mentioned.

I saw a 74 SD TA with sunroof in 76 in Decatur Il.
I think it was done locally though.
(maybe even by the Pontiac dealer)

They were beginning to be the rage back then.
Lots of people were doing sunroofs. (along with other stuff like van conversions)

Does anyone have buildsheets or PHS with the sunroofs on them?

The Mopars used bows. I had that 1971 Orange and White 426 Hemi Charger (in Wellborn Museum now) with the factory ASC sunroof. At least Chrysler put them on the broadcast sheet and the fender tag.

The interior portion of the sunroof used a molded plastic cover that encompassed the entire area around the panel from the windshield to the center of the headliner area, and from door to door. Maybe it was a "trim to fit" type unit that was used on all the installations?

I have a 72 SSJ with a sunroof and would be curious if the F body used the same sunroof.
Because they are not "factory" there couldn't have been that many companies making them back then.

I ran into a guy at Fall Carlisle that claimed he owned a 73 F body with sunroof, and said they were the same.

Yes, the big cars like the SSJ shared the same assemblies from ASC.

I did find out that the 72 SSJ's shared the same roof as the 72 Hurst/Olds so it's possible. I will say that I looked at a 73 GP with a sunroof and they are different.

On another note and with a bit irony........my car was advertised in '99 issue of smoke signals and was listed with sunroof. When I called to inquire about the car the seller made note that it wasn't one of those jigsaw pop ups. He found that folks were "put off" about a hole in the roof and passed on the car. Regardless, I was hot for a '73, price within reach and was just a 3 hr drive for me to have a look.........I came back home with a rare SD on the trailer. Too bad for those who thought otherwise.....

Larry, did your PHS show anything on it about the sunroof?

Any extra 'dealer sent to' on it?

PHS shows nothing. However, in the factory Pontiac service manuals it does show a code for the sunroof in an F-body car which suffices to say that while not listed within PHS, it was available.
