HEY WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS??
I WANT TO CHANGE THE RATIO IN MY REAR THE 4.10 SETUP IS JUST TOO STEEP. MY CAR IS MOSTLY STOCK, WITH THE ORIGINAL 400 AND T400 TRANS. THE ONLY USAGE OF THE GOAT IS PLEASURE DRIVING AND I'VE HAD IT WITH THE CURRENT SETUP. WANT TO LOWER MY RPM'S AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, BUT NOT TURN HER INTO A DOG OFF THE LINE. SHE CURRENTLY HAS A 10 BOLT POSI NOW. HOW DOES A 3.55 SOUND AND WHAT RPM'S WOULD I BE LOOKING AT FOR THE HIGHWAY.
THANKS FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS!!!

Switching from 4.10's to 3.55 will lower your R.P.M.'s about 450 r.p.m.'s at 60 m.p.h.

I just put 4.11's in my 68. I plan on going with the 2004R transmission. Properly set up, they will survive the torque of our '68 goats. It will lower the RPM at 60 mph by 1/3, or in our case 1000 RPM. It also has a steeper 1st gear so we will get off the line faster than our TM400's. It is the best of both worlds. My calculations with the 2004R, my 275x60x15 rear tires, and the 4.11 gears will put me at around 2000 RPM at 60 MPH.

I have not purchased the trans yet. HPP did a 6 part feature called "I feel the need 4 speed" in which they swapped a 2004R into a 1967 GTO. They describe the upgrades necessary to beef up the trans. Do a search on this board for 2004R and you will find the issues that covered the conversion. I expect to pay around $1,500 to $1,700 for the conversion. It will be money well spent.

Go with a gear ratio between 3.42's and 3.73's. I have 3.73's in my car with a 28 inch tire and I get very good mpg. Especially since my motor is a highly modified 462 Pontiac

here's the formula for cruise rpm mph x gear ratio x trans final drive x 336 divided by tire size ie; 65 x 3.55 x .76 x 336 divided by 28" tire = 2104 rpm. i believe .76 is the final drive in a 200r4. .70 is for a 700r4, or it could be the other way around.

Rob, the fourth gear ratio is .67 in the 2004R.
