Default Cam Thrust Plate Shim/Spacer

Need some help locating a few (2) timing gear spacers, the "shim" that sits between the gear and the face of the cam??

Even if anyone has the size, O.D., I.D., and thickness, I could probably make a few!

I have about a dozen OEM plates on the shelf and was surprised to see them sold without the spacers included?

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Wishing all here a very "Happy New Year"!

I think he may be talking about the plate that bolts to the block and holds the cam in?

Hey gosfast, are you running an electric fuel pump? Nitemare sells a washer that says it is needed if you go that way. Not sure why.

http://www.nitemareperformance.com/camwasher.html

He also sells different thickness cam plates, only 10 thou difference but it's there.

There are no shims unless you make then and even then you should not needed them when things are right as the matching of the rear of the Cam gear and nose of the Cam sets the back lash.

Also if you do use shims and you offset the Cam gear too much out of being parallel with the face of the Crank gear your going to eat up timing chains dam fast!

About the only thing I have ever done is to sand down the Cam retention plate about .003" one time.

Let me try again, maybe instead of saying timing gear I should have said cam gear, it sits between the cam gear and the face of the cam. It is a shim/spacer that sets the cam end pla.

With the plate averaging .126"/.127" thick the spacer should be about .130" thick, this sets the cam end play at about .003" nominal.

Without this spacer if you tighten the cam gear bolt it will "clamp" the cam gear to the front of the cam and lock it solid, cam won't be able to turn. It looks very similar to valve seat insert but smaller!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

Uh No. There is no setting,
All parts involved are hard dimension and when installed correctly will provided a workable amount of clearance given everything is in blue print tolerances

In fact if you added anything it would put things in a bind or would be so thin it wouldn't last very long

This "sounds like" a cam gear that's been machined flat on back for a torrington bearing.

Never seen stock or stock replacemant need a shim.

This is correct, my son, who is working on this unit, just called, customer supplied wrong timing set!

The cam gear is "flat" on the back side!

Really appreciate all the quick replies.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

Are you using the Sim's torrington bearing and cam gear setup?
(he's on PY machining/selling them)
