I own a 1971 LeMans T-37 that has the original 350ci w/350th, neither one has ever been overhauled with 87,000 miles on the od. My question is, I have the chance to buy a 400ci w/400th, that came out of a 1978 Bonniville, for $400. I was thinking about buying the pair and having them both overhauled and installing them in my LeMans. Would this be a good idea? Also, what kind of work and alterations am I looking at?

Dirk,
Go for the 400. There is no subsitute for Cubic inches. Use all the bracketry from the 71. Check the 400 block and make sure that it has all 5 mounting holes on each side. ( some only had 2 I have seen some).
I would first rebuild the 350 trans W/shift kit. This is the easiest way. Using the 400 requires another driveshaft and yoke. Also you need to wire a kickdown switch
like the GTO. Plus the 400 should be of the long tail variety not short like the GTO.
The Heads should be of the 6X variety giving you bigger valves and screw in studs.

The '78 Bonneville 400 block will ONLY have the triangular 3 motor mount holes on the side. This was true on '77 and later blocks. In order to use in 64-72 LeMans chassis, you will need to buy some motor mount adapters from our sponsor. FWIW, the '69 & earlier 400 is a direct bolt in a '72 or earlier 350 or 400 LeMans as the 326-350-400 A-body frame brackets are the same from 64-72. All 70-77 5 bolt (dual 3 & 2 bolt pattern) motor mount blocks will also bolt in without a hitch.
