I would think having the Pontiac crest at the front like an arrow pointing forward would be perfect. Just have the top of it the full width of the fins on the top. A little shot of red in the center & you're done. JMHO

Yeah, I have played with various sizes of the crest. Part of the problem is the first air cleaner hole in the front that restricts the placement of the logo. The other cludge is the angle of the crest at the points that come down to the V shape. Ah, let me see if I can fart around with it this morning and post something.

thanks

Which one do you guys like?

I just finished the engineering drawing after lunch today at 100% scale. I'm taking votes at this point which way to go. I wish making the parts was just as fast as drawing them.

The crest looks a bit big.

If it was built in the 80's and had a corporate engine I would say go with the GM logo - since it was a Pontiac, born in the 60's, cast in the Pontiac Foundry and installed in a 68 Firebird, my vote would be for the symbol.

Unless you wanted to put together something like RAIV-Z's avatar.

You could also push the symbol back further and machine the nuts for the top of the air cleaner like the cross in the center.

Yes, I have entertained the wing nut in the center of the crest star, but that would just look bad with bad taste and would require a 4 prong wing nut to make it even somewhat acceptable. The bigger problem is the recess for said wing nut. It would just blow the logo design into crap is my feeling.

Getting too crazy with a design is not the direction this project is going. Clean simple accents is the goal to fit the period.

Maybe I will just cut two emblems and be done with it since I have files now. The peanut gallery can weigh in on which one they like at the shows.

Here are the unfortunate realities of custom designs and working within the limitations of your canvas.

The crest is too large. If you reduce the crest, then it's not wide enough to tastefully place the emblem on the lid. If you move the crest to the front carb mount wing nut hole, it has good over all position and spacing on the front, but you are still dealing with the cheezy factor of the recess for the wing nut right in the middle of the Pontiac Crest. You can't distort the crest otherwise it will look odd and just wrong in general to Pontiac guys. Design may be subjective, but things done in bad taste will for sure bring attention to the changes. If it looks wrong, it is wrong.

Therefore, as I have said before, the crest really needs to go on some other air cleaner lid.

The GM logo is close to being implemented at this point.

But damn man, I really like this....

Maybe a custom lid with deboss crest, but that means drawing big time and that supporting time is not there yet. Maybe some day guys - I like the crest too, but, but, but.

The Pontiac crest looks great on your cover. Much better than the GM "Mark of Maintenance" logo. Why promote the corporation that killed off our brand?

Wing Down Bird symbol

or change the aspect ratio of the Crest - make it fit like the sample .

Just a thought
Maybe put the crest in the middle and larger? Between the wing nuts.

GT.

Thanks guys for the input.

The only way to do the crest correctly is to take out the two outer finned straight lines from the casting. I have thought about that, but then, I need to make a V cut to the front section where the crest would sit. At that point, I'm drawing at least half the air cleaner lid and coding cut files. I might as well just draw the whole damn thing at that point, acquire an aluminum blank and go to town. Like I said, drawing it is much faster then getting cutting time on the machine in a production environment.

The bird emblem would also require drawing and coding CNC time.

The problem with blending existing physical parts to vapor designs requires me to either scan parts, which I don't have access to, or take actual measurements and draw sections or pieces of the existing physical part. The existing old school air cleaners are rough sand castings which are very imperfect by today's modern machine tolerances. It's like putting the tooth paste back in the tube and expecting it to come out brand new.

To do the crest correctly requires more work then I have right now, but thanks for everyone's input that made me envision the initial design and seems to be the drug of choice with the fans here.

I need more time guys to make a completely new lid. The lower pan is going to be a bitch enough this summer.

Also, I just picked up another F body sub-frame to jig the new block so this gig is quickly getting hot and heavy this year.

Thought of that, but it would look cheezy to me trying to integrate too many variables into an existing part.

Putting the crest in the middle of the two wing nuts, I have thought about that as well, but another questionable good taste design goes sideways in my opinion.

You can always make mock-ups fit the intended use, but making parts marry with existing requirements and restrictions makes production that much harder. Again, it's easier to just start from scratch with something like this.

In reality - who says you have to put anything on the lid. None of the production ones had anything - it's only in recent years that the Buick style air cleaner decal has become standard.

This is true Boss, but branding a project is important to the whole overall effect of this project. I could always put a YUGO logo on it?
