Sounds like some neat experiences. I'm more of a reserved guy whereas I would rather look at people from afar and get a kick out of their reactions to what they are looking at. I remember last year a few guys were checking out my car and I told my wife. Hey hon, watch this. I told her that this one particular gentleman was going to scratch his head and ponder what he was looking at. Literally about 5 seconds later, he did exactly what I predicted. Now that's entertainment~!

This weekend, I did some bead blasting and a few custom cuts on the air cleaner with a buddies CNC machine. Sunday, is the final inventory of all the extra little parts that have to go to the intake builder. I feel, the single carb intake will be making the trip too...

A similar story but the look was on theopposite person's face. About 10 years ago I went to a Macdonalds for a qucik lunch down the block Next to it was a state vehicle inspection place(like a jiffy lube for inspections) I saw an orange 69 Firebird with Judge tyope strioped over the fenders. I stil had some time to get back to the office so stopped and looked under the hood. Guy's jaw really dropped when I asked him how long it had had the RAV in it He was shocked someone knew what it was. It was a car the Gays had put together years ago with the RAV in it from the beginning he had gotten.

What I thought was crazy was he was driving that thing around as much as it weas worth as a collector car with all the unisured drivers in that area!

Your project is cool, hope the dual quad deal works for you-growing up with a 409 as a first car kind of partial to them!

Thanks Skip for the story. There are so many cool tails to tell out there and I hope this thread brings out more of the lurkers to share their experiences. Speaking of driving a museum piece - sometimes I just wonder if I'm just plain dumb. If I smack the front end of this car, the insurance company will have a going out of business statement along with trying to find the parts to put it back together.

Seriously, I do drive the car like I stole it at times. I have pulled into the garage with smoke billowing out of the wheel wells which sets the smoke alarms off in the building.

For looking at rare stuff you North Texas folks esp North Dallas area need to meet Pat Lobb-Toyota dealer in Allen. He has two Z-11 409 cars(and enough motor parts to build a few more), he got up and running an experimental factory 409 fuel injection system and has some of the factory block blueprints that are as big as a conference table! Also a 65 factory Hemi SS car thin body panels no window cranks-straps.

He brings some of them out for the local car shows.

For all production parts that were released, there would be many renditions of cool experimental trinkets floating around. Obscura is really neat, but lets be honest guys. This is hard work to find parts if you actually can, let alone making all systems function with brackets etc. And most times, you just have to make it because it does not exist or it's not available.

Hence, us dummies right here.

Here are a few shots - collecting all additional parts and hardware for the x wife's exodus for a higher cause. The more information you have in your hands, the better the outcome. I hope I got it right with all that is required to make all your nightmares come true. Maybe I should of kept the X-wife, but I choose the car instead.

If anyone is interested in the single 4 barrel NOS V intake, I'm willing to listen.

I'm wondering if anyone noticed the extra runners inside the bowl area. I have only seen this on one RA V intake. 1970 model. I think it was a last late production part.

This project is multi-dimensional at best. Not only am I in the process of doing the intake, carbs getting done and wheels created - I'm drawing up ram air pans for the car. So far, I have had a blank fabricated to get the bowl size correct. Clearly, carb location to the intake and pan via the carbs needs - has to be spot on. This summer, I will start cutting parts for fitment. I think I better cut sintra or thick card stock for that though. I'm still debating how many levels I need to visit, implement, see before the final end product is complete.

NOPE~!

The ridges in the airflow tunnels are in the casting to help push the fuel alone on the floor of the intake passage that flows into the heads. I believe the engineering reason is to reduce pooling of fuel at the bowl.

UPDATE -

We have a flange thickness projected of .5 to .0625 inches. YEAH~!

Tripower intake is in hands.

Super slow today at work so I mocked up the first rendition of the lower pan. Clearly there will be changes that need to be implemented for fitment issues, but it should look something similar to this.

GM logo art is done and all I need to do is extrude it into 3D for a cut file.

The upper pan will be a flat part with reinforcement X bracing with a large oval hole that the air cleaner lid fits into.

Additional L-85 mock-up for fitment. Final letters cut a few weeks back.

Not sure about the combo color, but all red is too much and hard to read - all white is boring. Was considering losing the L-85 badging, due to other considerations, but then I have no where to put said badging on the car - to my knowledge and taste. I'm divided.

One of my local car club buddies has been kind enough to let me borrow a under hood frame structure that does not have the exterior skin. What a kind offer he presented to me as of last night. This will be a great aid in checking the fitment challenges that are ahead of this project. I also spoke to a few engineers in house today about sheet metal gauge thickness for brazing and cutting requirements. Since we have a plasma laser cutter in house all I have to do is draw the part and get it into Surf Cam to cut. Prior to that, I will be making card stock mock-ups for fitment.

2013 has become pretty exciting for this project that has been 24 years in the making. Seems like it's never done.

Can I ask why the GM logo on the filter lid rather than Pontiac?

Hey Boss -

There was and still is a lot of different versions of what I could put on the air cleaner lid. I toyed around with the Pontiac crest and was clearly the first choice of logos. It still is not off the table to do some kind of rendition, but I was finding fitment and clean line issues with the crest. If you look at the finned strips, it says square lines.

The crest is organic/angular which would have to, in my opinion, need a different style lid choice. I have thought about just cutting a custom lid out of solid billet, but that would take more time to draw and is, far more complex with extended cut time. Still, not off the table either, but at this point, I want less projects associated with Samantha.

Maybe I will just print a crest and visit the subject again. Thanks for sparking that thought.

The other reason why I went with the GM logo, is because usually any Project X car build, would of been from corporate to the best of my knowledge. So to me, a GM logo says Pontiac development at corporate level. - COPO comes to mind.

I have also considered the PMD logo on the front, but all that you are reading is live thread feed design, so I have not gotten that far down the road with all options. Serious multitasking going on, and it's my own fault. I fit in concepts, renderings, drawings and testing constructs as work permits.

Was thinking of doing a V for Ram Air V. but, ah - I'm not hot for that direction.

The attached RAM AIR emblems are GM corporate castings from PMC.

I have not considered L-85 or 428 which comes to mind, but damn, 428 is all over the car. It's enough.

SD in Super Duty is also stickered and badged, enough too.
