77 Formula with a rebuilt 403 Olds and transmission at $5K BIN in CA. The rebuild alone would cost that. This won't last long.

Some interesting stuff out there but this hobby has basically gone to hell. Every time there is a car worth looking at its gone in a day or less. Anything sitting for more than a few days and it prob isn't worth your time anyway as several have already passed on it. I have been looking for over a year and the cars I find are either a) restored and out of my range, b) basket case that need everything and are still over 10K, or c) in the middle somewhere and sold almost immediately. Unless you are ready to buy something sight unseen or you get really lucky with a local car going up forget it, someone will have beat you to the punch.
I finally saved up some money for a decent car that doesn't need everything (or so I thought) and I still can't get my hands on one. I suppose I ought to find another hobby because I am not chasing these into the stratosphere. Sorry, I had to get this off my chest. ****RANT OVER**** |

There are situations out there where people need money and hobby cars are the easiest to way to get it, which is why I like the No Reserve auctions. If there is a listing for a No Reserve car and and someone looks at it and they make a deal, the car gets pulled and the deal is done outside of eBay. If it's a very good deal Buy It Now, it will probably sell quickly. In looking for potential cars, my #1 consideration is rust. If you want a numbers matching car like the brown 70 400 Ram Air Firebird, it will need probably $10K in body work alone not including paint. The white Formula on the top of this page is a CA car with a rebuilt engine and transmission. Any 70 to 81 Trans AM fenders and hood can be bolted on to it and you have a TA clone. The nice thing about the second Gen Firebirds is they're all pretty much the same. You can bolt a 70 front end and hood onto a 80 and though the taillights are different, they look very good. The first Gen Firebirds are still out there, but 1969 was a long time ago. Again, I'll take a solid rust free body without an engine or transmission over a running 350 car. |

agreed 100% on the rust. That is why I do not want to buy sight unseen. Too much stuff being written off as 'minor'. I will pull an engine any day over having to replace a quarter panel.

You can tell a lot from the pics. Obvious deep rust is easy to spot, but if there's pics where rust usually is, but it's not there, then you're probably good. When the carpet is pulled up so you can see the floorboards then that's about as good as it gets. Another major clue is where it's from. I'm in Colorado and cars do get rusted here, but not like they do in Wisconsin. Cars from CA lead a pretty happy life without snow.

Before it was said it had #'s YZ engine with correct carb and distributor intact. Somebody must have made a deal for the engine/trans |

That's a shame. The hood, air cleaner and the 12 bolt (if it's a posi) is worth $2K. Tragic they parted it out.

1969 Pontiac Firebird with a reserve at $2K in California. What do you think a car like this is worth? It supposedly had a frame off and is a really nicely done restored "restomod" car with the caveat that it has had a dern frame off. I would think the seller prolly has over $50K in it and it's a Calif car so no rust. If I had the money this car is prolly worth $35K as is. What do you think?

1947 Pontiac Torpedo at $1K with a reserve. Never heard of a Torpedo, but I guess it's a thing? Nice looking car and I bet it handles well, but if you were to actually drive this, wouldn't you want shoulder harness belts? I never did get the smooth firewall but I guess it looks cool. Nice car with a Chebby engine and very different.

1979 Trans AM in Maryland at $1200 NR. Seller thinks it's a 350 but I'm pretty sure the 69 YB engine is a low compression 400. Also claims to have a 72 Trans AM 455 HO intake on it, which by itself is worth a bunch. Doesn't look like a lot of rust. Also claims to have a rebuilt transmission. Could be a real diamond in the rough here?

2004 stick GTO in Indiana at $17.5K BIN with 57K on it. This Pontiac is a real sleeper, prolly because it looks like a Toyota. These cars are fast and fun to drive. My old boss had one that was supercharged and it would lay rubber for as long as you wanted to.

Can't be just me... this car seems like a really great deal. 2002 Trans AM yellow SE collector's edition WS6 stick with 15K miles on it for $10.5K BIN in Florida. It has some rear quarter panel damage, but has a signed dash and a lot going for it. If I had room (I have 4 Pontiacs now) I would definitely consider this one. This is a really cool car. If you did some front end work on bidding for the car and it turned out something was wrong, then you could justifiably get out of it. People get away with "my wife said no" excuses. If you want in the hobby, this is a very cool car and you'd have a leap of faith (BIN) to put a down payment on it and fly out and get it done in person.

This is a cool car. 70 GTO convert in Baja Gold for $72K (Dealer). Judge stripes and Ram Air hood and air cleaner added. This car would look so much better as it rolled out of the factory. It's a really pretty car IMO.
