Default Transmission cooling

I like to race in multiple classes when I go, so, I have a routine for my engine temp that allows me to run multiple classes (hot lap if I'm that lucky). This involves an electric water pump and two electric fans as well as a good cooling system.
What I have not found is a good way to keep my transmission temps down. After a few rounds, my temps get over 200 degrees, and it seems to cause reaction time issues (terrible lights)
Has anyone put in a pump that will circulate transmission fluid in the pits/or as auxilliary to allow for quicker cooling of the transmission fluid without the front pump turning.?
Any other ideas or fixes to get rid of this saturation? - Bill -

Bill, I have heard this Meziere Trans pan works well. I know of quiet a few guys that are using it and are eliminating there trans coolers with some sucsess
In a nutshell it's a trans pan that has coolant passages that uses coolant to cool the oil in the pan. Catch is you have to plumb lines off of your water pump (pres & return).
Here is the link. Just a thought.

Jason - That is an interesting concept.-. Bring the cooling to the pan. While I do have a T-400 if it catches on, it wont take long for someone to build more sizes and types.
I was more thinking in the lines of getting the fluid away from the pan and to a fluid radiator with a fan, using some kind of pump. Kinda like a transfusion for a transmission.
Where I seem to have the problem, is after 5-8 time trials, and two to three rounds, I just can't get the tranny to cool off.

Tilton also makes an inline pump: http://tiltonracing.com/sites/default/files/editor_uploads/files/98-1901%20%28Diff%20pump%29%283%29.pdf
Don't know how well it works though.

Bill--
Just thinking outloud here, since it wasn't mentioned, but:
1-Is the cooler big enough?
2-Does your cooler have a fan on it as well? They do make them.
3: Does your cooler have constant airflow to it like a radiator should?

Again, you didn't mention so I am just asking.. We have done these above, as well as wrap lines with heat protective covering if they are near exhaust or headers, and like previously mentioned, run/fabricate some sort of cool can inline with dry ice or fluid...But what I have found is the basics Like I have mentioned above were enough to keep things cool enough, even running hot lap rounds..

Thanks for all the links guys - there sure are a lot of ideas out there!
I do have two coolers, one in front of the radiator and one tie wrapped to the bottom of the radiator. They are in series. I dont go up on the limiter until the top bulb comes on. I have used a fan in the pits, the carpet drying kind, but once the tranny gets over 200 degrees, it just doesn't cool off fast enough. I really want to circulate the fluid when the car is off. I saw several products on the links that would do this....Bill.. I also have a deep finned pan.

Having the fluid circulate with the car off and have an electric fan cooling it would be ideal like many do with their cooling system between rounds and on street cars. Cools down real fast. If you can make that happen, problem solved..
I was actually referring to an actual cooler with an electric fan attached to it, while running and making a pass and idling. They make dedicated coolers with their own dedicated fan attached to it..if it got real expensive to run a pump in line as well, this may be a good alternative as Trans coolers help dissipate heat at low speeds but do their job at higher speeds, at lower speeds, the fan comes into play to keep it cool..Just a suggestion and what has worked perfect for us in the past..

Bill, I realize you are running a t-400 but here is another option for a powerglide
http://www.atiracing.com/products/tr...arts/scs30.htm

It has a external trans pump and cycles the fluid with the engine off!

I know just about every pro mod guy out there that is using a converter is using something to cycle trans fluid through a cooler in one way or another.

I'm sure with the turbo guys going to the Turbo 400 case I'm almost certain something is available for what your wanting to do.

Pumping oil from the pan to a separate cooler/fan assy then return to trans should be adequate.

I looked into this issue A LOT when having trouble with the turbo cars trans - th400 - turned out not to be cooler related but did learn a lot. I now run my trans cooler lines thru an ice bath as the air cooler type we use are maginally efficiant. you can do it via the regular cooler lines or plumb seperate lines in and out of the pan to a cooling coil in an Ice box -- Id be glad to talk to you as my typing here sucks -- Curt

There is small 12 volt fans that you could put directly on a cooler,
get the cooler off the radiator so the fan can blow directly on the cooler in a dedicated manner

the ones i have are similar in build as in the link but mine are about 6 inch square many in this link are just to small the link is just to provde a reasonable facsimile

If you can keep the trans fluid from reaching the high temps to begin with, then additional cooling might not be necessary. The stacked plate type cooler does a much better job of dissipating heat. I run two of these in series: B&M Trans Cooler

Thanks, everyone for the many ideas and links. I think for now I will do as Mick and others suggest and get a much better/bigger cooler w/fan. If that wont do it, I will reinvestigate getting the fluid away with the ability to circulate without the car running.
Thanks to PY forums for allowing us to get these ideas out there!!! - Bill -

fwiw... I just tested an old holley red pump in the shop... it moved cold tranny fluid just fine... just recirculated it back to the jug but did use about 8 ft of hardline and hose... I let it run 10 minutes... pump didnt seem to get very warm... I even got it to pull oil from long end with no trouble...

Dont have a clue how it would hold up at high oil temp but might be an option worth further testing.
