Default Quick Cheap Mod for '69 - '72 GPs with AT

Apologies in advance if this has been done and posted before...

I bought a recessed cupholder made for a boat at West Marine for 99 cents. I took the console ashtray and traced it on a small sheet of aluminum from ACE Hardware that I bought for a few bucks, then cut it out. Next, I centered the cupholder on it and cut that out. I was left with two aluminum "wings" which I epoxied under the lip of the cupholder. Next, I filed the wingless sides of the cupholder rim, using the ashtray as a template. Then I slightly trimmed the plastic ashtray mount in the console plate with my Dremel.

Voila, a very functional mod which looks fairly stock and is almost completely reversible. I say almost because it involves trimming the ashtray mount. Otherwise, it fits fine and the sliding door closes normally. It lifts in and out, so the ashtray can be replaced and the trimming isn't seen. There is no mod to the console, plate, or sliding door whatsoever.

For those who are a stickler on originality, there is almost always a console plate w/ashtray mount on eBay at any given time, often for as little as $20. I have a spare mount and the original ashtray stashed away.

Sure beats holding a cup between your legs, or balancing it on the passenger's seat during a road trip or cruise!

Thanks! I drive mine often, in fact I drove it to work today, so the cupholder gets alot of use. Funny how little things like that can make you smile. It's in a great position ergonomically as well, the holders in my F-150 are almost behind me.
