Not sure of your question? Repops don't have pN..OEM were installed on cars and had pN and only tips chrome. Replacement NOS were all chrome with pN from parts counter..
From 70-71...

#478022 exhaust tips are correct number for either original or factory replacement
And, as Judge 273 pointed out, originals were ONLY chromed on the tips, with the attaching pipe in the natural metal finish. The tips were welded to the attaching pipe and the weld was unfinished.
The early replacement tips were made the same way and were sold by Pontiac for many years. Later replacements were welded together and THEN chromed, so the entire tip was plated. The first pic below is an early, original-style tip (as sold by Pontiac). Second pic is the later, replacement (but still sold by Pontiac) tip. Third pic shows the part number stamped into the tip. I don't have any pics of a reproduction exhaust tip, unfortunately. Hope this helps. |

goatman73,
I have a pair like yours; P/N on the neck not on the tip like Joe's. I got these some time ago in a large batch of old stuff. All the other stuff was parts counter stuff pre-dating most repo stuff, but that is not a guarantee they aren't repo.

Unless I'm mistaken. I stated repops never stamped pN on tailpipes for 70-71 chrome splitters.
Since, I have a Gardner on my 71 Judge like 10 years ago. and repops on my 70 Judge like 18 years. Recently repops on my gt-37 don't have them. That's just my opinion... From your pictures the NOS replacement all chrome and OEM had that checkered pattern seen in yours that repops don't have.

Have a pair of NOS tips with the numbers from the late '80's. Have original tailpipes with original tips that the plating isn't bad, but cutting off & welding not sure if it will burn through.
Know each NOS tip could be dechromed @ the platers, but could electrodes be positioned just to plate each tip portion?

I didn't know you had a fire and that's why the nos are discolored.
Have you tried a very very fine steel wool to clean and shine the chrome? I also noted my repops don't have same weld looks of the NOS ones.

Did original tips have the part numbers or just the replacements from GM?

yes already tried steel wool but was scratching them and that was with 0000 steel wool and mothers polish, came out somewhat shiny by using my buffing wheel that's on grinder, but this is as good as it gets without re chroming them.lost a lot of stuff in the fire including 2 judges ,2 ho 70 gtos 1 was convert, not a very fun experience.

By the way, when re-chroming, just make sure the chrome shop can re-engrave the part numbers.

The first pic Joe shows are NOS tips, chrome on the tips only, WITHOUT part numbers, just a GM tag. So they are out there. Probably both are correct. Never did find out about the fire.
