As the kid wasn't interested enough to come and get the tools himself, he obviously didn't want them that much.

Done deal.

If it's too much trouble to come pick something up for free, then it's too much trouble for me to give it away...

You made the right call. If it was too much effort to get off his butt and pick up the tools, he would have likely never used them.

Definitely. At the same age, I was given the chance to pickup some free Pontiac parts. I was not only early to pickup the parts, I also helped the man clean up his garage!

I drove 3 hours each way to poncho-mike's place to pick up free parts in my ratty old F250 getting 11MPG. It was worth it to me. If the kid can't be bothered to come get the stuff that's *free* and only costing him gas, then unless he has a valid reason (car broken, actual job keeping him busy, etc) it wasn't cheap enough for him. You did the right thing.

If the kid had shown up, he probably would have expected gas money from you for his trouble.

You did the right thing! If the kid wanted it he would have come and got it, not mommy!

At the very least he could have called you and personally asked if you minded holding them until he could get up there. That way he could plan on it for when he 'feels like it'.
He's just lazy in my opinion and Mommy is just propping him up. She probably still makes his bed.

Just a thought - some senior housing developments have woodworking shops for resident's use. I'd bet you could find some appreciative tool hounds there.

There is a retirement center near me that has a woodshop. They do basic repairs for donations, my mom brought some lamps there and I want along for the ride with her. Their shop puts mine to shame I'm afraid to say. My thing is I use all handtools no power tools at all. Maybe some more tools would make those guys feel young again ha ha Ha

Your stuff, your rules. You not feeling quite right about it is the only thing that matters. I gave a set of heads to a kid once because I thought he needed them. Took him 2 weeks to come get them, and I was thinking maybe I ought to just keep them. Finally he showed up and then I saw them for sale the next day on Kijiji (like craigslist). Thought about going and getting them back, but didn't.

You did the right thing. Hopefully, the kid learned a life-lesson. But the odds are against it. He'll blame you, not himself, for his own lack of initiative. Not your problem or concern.

You should have driven over there and carried the tools into the kids house and thanked him for taking them when hell freezes over.

Pete, I agree 100% with Champ.

The kid probably wouldn't have used them anyway. More than likely they'd end up in a yard sale and he would have made money with what you were giving him for free. You did the right thing.

Mommy shouldn't be getten her panties all bunched up at you, should show her ass to the "Xbox Kid", maybe get him outa the house for a change.

With her attitude, seems to me she's the reason things are... the way they are... don't worry bout it bud.
