Looking for my car
I'm brand new to this site, so please bear w/me. I just joined the site and I'm not sure which forums to go to. I restored my 64 GTO in in 1983 and took it to the 83 Street Machine Nat's in Syracuse. I sold it before getting married and now I'm looking for it. I live in Mass. and ran the VIN through the RMV with no response. The VIN is 824P243718. Is there a GTO registry somewhere listing all the cars or is this a state-by-state search?
thanks Brian |

Long Shot
I don't like to be negative, but it's probably like lookin for a needle in a haystack. You would probably come out better either restoring another car, or buying one that's already done. Of course, it would be cheaper to build a GTO clone using a Tempest or Lemans. Here's a few I just found online.

Ditto Bill. If it was in good shape in '83, good chance it still exists.
VIN registrations are state specific, but due to privacy laws, you won't be able to get anything directly from the DMV. About 7-8 years ago, my sister worked for an auto insurer. I stumbled over the VIN of the '73 TA I owned '78-'80 and asked if she could determine if it was still registered. Don't know what database she had access to but it was national in scope. She came back with the name and address of the current owner who I was able to contact. Side note, he recently contacted me because he is thinking of selling it. I think it may have been not quite ethical for her to do what she did for me then, but it worked out. She is out of that business now, so I have lost that resource. But my suggestion is to contact your insurance agent and talk to him. He probably doesn't have access to the database himself, but maybe he knows somebody in the Corp. office that would be willing to run the VIN for you. Law enforcement can also have access but there is little chance they will run the search for you. Another thing you can do, join POCI and GTOAA and run a classified looking for the car. Others do it, I don't know how much success they've had. Good luck. |

No help in locating it, but there is hope. These cars just started to get appreciated again and were valued highly in the early-mid '80's. The fact that it was in excellent shape in 1983 is a great indicator that it still exists. It wasn't just another worn out used car at that time, but something special. Keep after it, you may get lucky.

lost car
Gents, thanks for the upbeat support. I'll take these suggestions and start to look harder for my old car. I was in good shape and last knew it was only a few towns away. I had that guys info and of course I lost it. It's been registered after I had it so it out there !! I keep this forum updated with my findings.
Bill it took only 15 years? Ha, glad you found it. On another note by bro-in-law sold his 71 T/A 455 HO. Ya you guessed it, he wants that back to. Last he knew it was on Cape Cod. Last edited by BRIFLYER; 10-04-2014 at 08:19 PM. |
