What are they worth on a dyno ? I have a electric fan but not sure if I want to use it on the 461.
I have the fan and a V pump but thinking about going with a normal fan and header E vac for the little engine and saving the electric fan and V pump for the 540 IA2 engine. Time reasons as much as anything. April will be here quick and I would like to make the first race. I might gyno the 461 if I can swing it. |

Primary purpose for Elec Fan is Reliability, not HP or better/worse cooling comparisons.
I cracked-out an Iron Waterpump on the Highway during a 2-3 upshift. In-town Chevy guy launceh his Mech fan through hid hood at Maple Grove at the Tree. Since then, no biggie Mech fan, and primary cooling is passive through the Radiator, with the electric fan used during peak heating (lights, Summer highway, long idling). |

Engine Masters had an episode where they tested belt driven fan hp loss on a dyno. They tested on a 350 hp (with no fan) SBC and the best fan was an OE clutch fan that killed 14 hp at 5200 rpm. I would assume hp loss would be greater on an engine turning higher rpm.

14 HP of drag during acceleration is asking for a broken water pump, pulley, or lunching the fan loose.

A friend with a very consistent bracket car cycles elec pump & fan between rounds to control temps -( I’m sure he’s not the only one) he swears by it.

But I think I would need a generator running in my pit to do it. I would like to avoid that if possible. There are a couple pits that have electricity right there but my pit is the first one form the starting line right on the rail. Its great for family and friends watching and hanging out. |

The pump went bad so I don't run it anymore but I did try it with the belt on and off back when it worked , no ET or MPH difference in my case. |

On average I have seen a gain of 10-12HP GAIN when removing the clutch fan and installing an E-Fan. However its difficult to beat the reliability of a clutch fan... in the end you have to decide how bad you really need that 10-12HP gain... I personally just like the cleaner look with an e-fan so I do it more for looks than the power gain.
With all that said, I have been really considering using a clutch fan on my current 496 build... reliable street ability is priority on this build. SPEED SAFE, NICK

Ahh yea, the time when the clutch fan locks while your accelerating, nothing like it.
Went through 3 clutch fans that each locked-up solid when failed. Na, nope, no more. |

E fans are a no brainer. No way I'd risk a fan at 7300. Also with an e water pump it cools in the pits very efficiently without bumping the motor to circulate water. There are very few autos that use mechanical fans these days and it is because it is more reliable and efficient to run electric.
