One of the guys I ride with has had his replaced, was maybe 4 years ago. He rides a full bagger and he has not had any issues parking the bike. These things are a bear to back up, he takes that slow, but again seems to be doing it better then before he went in.

Here's to a quick recovery.

Thanks Harry. I ride a Heritage so it is lighter. I just hope that I will not have the pain I would get in my hip after long rides.

His went away, the loss of riding joy was one of the driving forces behind his decision to get it done. He was religious about the PT they assigned him and credits that to the strength he has now.

Just be aware you won't be dragging your knees through any turns for a while, lol.

I just saw this thread and scanned through it but I didn't see any mention of the newer 'anterior approach'. If I missed it, sorry for the repeat info. Using an anterior approach the docs don’t have to cut away and through muscle compared to the more traditional surgery. They actually get up and on your feet the same day. It’s really remarkable.
Here is a link to our site.

Dr Berry was the first doc in the area to train for this and that was a few years ago and since then he has trained several other docs. Here is a link to an interview done recently discussing the anterior approach.

My Doctor actually went with the posterior approach as he feels that the muscles are easier spread apart than taking a chance with the front thigh area. He does use the least invasive method that uses cameras and computer aided locating of the prostheses. My incision is only 4" long. I have been up a couple of times and it does not feel too bad. Where he had to place the lower camera in my front thigh hurts the most. It just feels like the worst Charlie horse I ever had.

My wife does the rehab fro these proceedures and others. She often says that the patients who follow the program recover quite quickly and and usually much better off then they were before. The knee she says is a whole other ballgame.....Mark

Glad you're doing well quick67bird. My hips are still holding up so far. I have an appointment Feb. 2 with a surgeon who uses the Anterior approach. My hope is to go in and have both done at once with a short recovery. I'll read that document you posted and follow your progress if you keep us updated.

Oh, a friend of a relative recently had an anterior replacement. She was walking the same day and is doing marvelous. This is her second hip replacement, the first being the through the side type with a long recovery. She's singing the praises of the anterior method to anyone who'll listen.

have any of you recieved advise from the doctors on joint preservation? drinking water i guess would be tops. glucosamine/condroiten? anything else?

i worry more about my joints than my lungs. i'm 45 and i'm just beginning to feel joint pain.

i feel for you and mick and the others needing replacement and wish you a strong recovery.

Research it good. The biggest thing that worried my DR with the Anterior approach is the nerves in the front.

The biggest advice I can give you is stool softner and I mean the maximum dose. It is better to have to go to the bathroom a lot before the surgery than pass a sandpaper brick afterwards. I took the minimum dosage and regret it.

Supplements can't hurt, but I think the most important thing is to keep a healthy weight and to stretch good. I was pretty rough on my body with dirtbikes and what not so I am paying for it today.

Great thread and informative. My wife is 43 and has had JRA (juvineile rhematoid arthritis) since 12 y/o. Six years ago she had her entire lower spine reconstructed (9 hour surgery), rods, screw, plates, cages, etc.

Then, 3 years ago she had her left knee replaced (full). Twelve months later she had the other replaced. Then, staph infection set in and that took almost a year to battle. She had to go 12 months without any signs of the staph infection before they can go ahead and now replace both hip joints. She will have the fist one replaced within the next 6 months. We hope it goes well and we sure hope no signs of infection!

Hope you're doing well. My boss had both hips done at once, age 50. He turned 60 yesterday, -doing great! He said he wishes he had it done earlier.

I am progressing well. I can walk the whole floor with crutches and take 3-4 steps with no support at all. I think I will be able to go to a cane in another couple of days. Other than the Charlie horses and weakness in the muscles themselves the pain is not too bad. The actual joint pain is less than I have felt in years.

Arrow Two more hip replacement successes...

I'll mention this thread to Les Iden (Wheelspin) and let him report the great success that his wife has had with her surgery earlier this year, and what was involved and what joint they used.
Good friend Mick Batson (lust4speed) is home resting after his successful total hip replacement ast Friday. it won't be long before he is prowling around the secretly located Pontiac Garage compound. Mrs. Spin had her full hip replacement surgery about a year ago, dropped a few pounds, and looks and acts 20 years younger .

QB, the guy we ground crew for with the Mig-21 and L-39 had both hips replaced, 1 in 2006 and one in 2008. He has no compaints at all. He said to tell you you want Cobalt Chrome on Cobalt Chrome..... get nothing else. This will last your lifetime where pastic and ceramic won't. The ceramic joint can actually explode and make a real mess out of you.

Joe is a power weight lifter and today squats 315lbs, dead lifts 400, plus he skis. No BS. And he still climbs in and out of both jets with no problems. Well...... a little loss in range of motion is about all.

Do a web search for Dr. Steve Dellose here in Wilmington, Delaware. He is the best in this field and knows his stuff. Phone number is 302-655-9494. If you call, tell him you got his number and info on this from Joe Gano of Warbirds of Delaware. As Joe said to me this morning... make sure you DO call him.

PM me if you want more info.... Joe will talk to you if you want. I'll give him your number and you give him a time to call.

Yeah I know, Delaware is a long way from Washington..... but if you want the best it will be worth it.
