Default 18" rim & tire packages for 1970 GTO

Finally decided on wheel size and stance that I wanted and landed on 18" Ridler 650s with grey spokes.

FWIW...my GTO will be using 2" drop spindles and 4 wheel disc.. I want my 70 to look similar to this...maybe a little wider in rear.

Found this site/vendor -"Rims n TIres" and saw that they had direct fit (guaranteed) for my 1970 GTO and a number of rim/tire packages that look like a decent deal with Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Ultra High Performance tires.

18 x 8 (front) (4.5" BS) with 225/45R18 (only)
18 x 9.5 (rear) (5.3" BS) with options of 255 to 285 and 40 or 35 series

Wondering if 225 is enough up front and what would be best in back to fill the space, but not look too wide (pro-touring-ish). Was thinking 265/40R18 to be safe.

Does anyone have any advice for what I am trying to achieve? Since they are "guaranteed/direct fit" I assume the backspacing is ideal?

Also...any experience with the vendor - "Rims n Tires"?

These are 245/45ZR17 wheels on my 70 GTO. Car was not lowered. I bought the complete package( wheels/ tires/ center caps and lug nuts) from an on-line place in Texas. Two of the center caps were dinged and the company replaced no questions asked. Great combo fro driving and cornering compared to the original 14" Ralleys.

Can’t see why you couldn’t run a 245/40-18 (25.72” tall) instead of the 225/45-18 (25.97” tall).

In my opinion a 225 is too small, not enough tread on the ground.

Backspace may be somewhat close to ideal, but most assuredly limited to whatever backspacing is available in that particular wheel size and width that’s being produced in that style.

A wheel with the most ideal backspacing might be as much as or even more than an inch wider and allow a 255/40 to fit.

Wheel stores like this are selling whatever they can find available from their suppliers in sizes that will be a safe bet but not necessarily the biggest or widest possible.

I think you will be disappointed with 225’s up front, especially on that size wheel.

I have 275 40/17’s all the way around on my 70 GTO

Looks like you’re running 9” wide wheels all around.

1970 - 1972 A-body front fender wheel openings are pretty spacious, especially when compared to the 1968 - 1969 cars. Not the least bit surprised that a 275/40-17 works in the front with the right wheels.

I was able to squeeze 18x9” wheels all around (245/40 and 275/40) on my 1964 Tempest which has much less room than a 1970. This can only be accomplished by carefully measuring your clearances and then searching for wheels with the proper backspace in the styles that you like.

I ended up with 5.5” of backspace in the front and 6.57” in the rear to shoehorn in the 18x9” wheels.

I've got 18's on my 70. 245/45/18 rear on 9.5" wide wheel, 275/40/18 front on an 8" wide wheel. Actually if I use a tire calculator the tires are pretty close to a 245/60/15.

I'm guessing you mean that the 275s (9.5" rim) are on the rear and 245s (8" rim) up front?

If so, that's pretty much where I think I need to be. Looks great.

You will want a 45 series tire in front and 45 or 50 series(depending on tire width) in back to look right.

Yeah, I probably have that backwards, The car is still in storage so it's not at home to look at.

By chance...do you remember the backspacing on your rims?

Exclamation

FWIW...my GTO will be using 2" drop spindles .

Mmmm , I put those on my GTO and when I dropped the jack the frame just fell to the ground and there was no way to get clearance of it.
Screwed my QA-1's all the way up no difference.

4.5 on the 18x8 and 5 on the 19x9.5. I wish they would have had a little more back spacing on the rear wheel. it doesn't hit but I would prefer a little more room.
