Looking for 650-675 HP in a 455
Here's what I am working with... a .035 over 455 with an eagle rotating assembly with SRP pistons. I would like to ditch the out of the box 87cc E heads, the Perf RPM intake, and the comp 110 520 and 540 roller cam but keep the 850 holley and make a few adjustments to that. The trans is built real well by a local guy with a 3200 converter, a stock driveshaft, (which will be changed) and a 9 inch with 389's with 35 spline axles and a locker and spinning 275 drag radials. The car is a 70 lemans that has done 11.60's. Since then we have put the car on a diet. It has no power steering, virtually no interior, and has a glass hood a decklid. A cage is in the plans shortly. Anybody have an idea of weight? So the plan is to have the heads ported to 340cfm or so, port match the victor I just bought and install a cam in the .660 lift range and 260/270 duration at .050. Does that sound about right? Does anyone have any cam recommendations for this? This is what I think I need to do just from reading this forum and other books. I mainly play 500 hp and below for street cars with some strip action. just looking to go to the next level here. Thank you in advance!!

What will the CR be? Does it need to run on pump gas? The 850 carb maybe a little to small.

You might need slightly more than 260 degrees intake duration @0.050" to get to your goal and you need to consider if your current converter will work with the extra power. My 499 ci motor makes almost 700 Hp with 335 cfm heads and 11.2:1 static CR, look at my cam size in my sig.

3200 stall and a 260 to 270@.050 SR cam isn’t matched up very well. Should probably either use a smaller SR cam in the 245 to 255 range with .65+ lift with the 3200 stall and 850 carb. Or step up to the bigger 260* plus cam with at least a 4000 stall or higher and more carb.

Compression would be 11-1. Hoping to run pump gas.

Like 267-@50 itake and 270 ish exs @ 50. At least 950 carb and 4500-5000 stall and 11:00-11:50:1 comp and victor int. Will work good with pump gas as it's more like I run with my cars. Call me if you'd like too and I can give some more info what works for myself and maybe you too. (269 832 8122) GT |

Depending where you live, any rock quarry or grain elevator will have a scale. I've never been charged to use one.

Funny thing is my buddy owns a trash hauling business and we never weighed it. Yet...

Blue ghost, i will take you up on that. I'm gonna roll it down and get a current weight after the diet if that helps. I appreciate the help here, so maybe the goal of the car will help you better tell me what I need. This car will need to run 10.60-10.90 on the 275 radials naturally aspirated. It will see very limited street use. It will cruise no more than 10 miles from home and never on the highway and do maybe 400 miles a year. Does the cam have to be a solid roller, hoping not to dip into the bottom end.

It sounds like the combo and performance level that you are looking for is very similar to what I am running in my 79 T/A. I have a 400 stroked to 463 with KRE 325 heads, port matched Northwind intake and a Quickfuel 950 carb. C.R. is approx. 10.5 to 1 and 93 octane is fine. The cam is a Lunati solid roller, 262/270 with .640 lift. First trip to the track was last Nov. and then again this past weekend. Only made 7 passes so far and only 1 to the full 1/4 mile. No tuning at this point; just trying to sort out the traction issues. Best 1/8 mile was 6.74 on a 1.52 short time; didn't make a full pass. Very next pass had wheel spin and the 60' dropped off to 1.79 but I decided to run this one all the way out, 11.09 at 125. This could have easily been a 10.79 pass if you take away the nearly 3 tenths lost in the 60'. I am also using the converter that was behind my 403 Olds; perfect for the small block but way off for the 463. I cannot launch any higher than 2000 rpm; the engine pushes right through the converter and I roll through the beams. Anyway, all of this is just to say I think your goals are very attainable. I don't think my combo is anything radical and with some tuning and a matched converter I think I could see 10.50s. Also should mention that my race weight is 3650 with 1/2 tank of gas. Good luck on your build.

Only made one full pass but I think it was right around 6200. I was shifting at 5900-6000 between gears.

Thanks for the replies guys. Its in the works but were cutting it close for it to be out in mid April. One thing we never checked is will a Victor intake fit under a flat LeMans hood?

You can run more than 10.5-1 on pump gas but you had better have a cam designed for it.

What does the cam need to look like?
