Local motor... Should I go for it?
I have a dilemma with the 455. In the mean time I'm looking for something to pull thisboat around till I can do it right and get my motor finnished. I found a 400 locally freshly built by an enthusiast at a negotiable $900. He has 4 pontiac engines around so I see his thinking is in the right place. But, I'm looking for opinions on this build. thanks in advance. any flow info on these #11 heads off 1970 350/400 running 255/265hp at
8.8-1 cr I do an engine every year for a winter project but there's no vehicle to put this in. -short block is from a 1973 Catalina wreck with low miles, very clean and only inspected, not taken apart and rebuilt. Has all 6 mount holes (many don't) , so can go in any Pontiac Firebird, Lemans, Ventura, etc. -pistons are flat-top 10 thousands down from the deck -heads are #11 (73cc) from a 1970, so we have nearly 10:1 compression and will require premium gas -heads have 1.96 intake valves, press-in studs, and are tapped for exhaust manifolds (included), not headers--but can be done before installation -New Felpro head gaskets and NEW head bolts -gaskets changed throughout motor -New Summit 2801 camshaft and lifters, degreed 4 back for better dynamic compression, with new SA Gear double roller timing chain -stock oil pan, 3/4 windage tray, and 1973-vintage 4 barrel intake manifold (needs EGR or can be blocked off) cleaned and reinstalled -complete with water pump installed -no carb or fuel pump
