Angry Converter issue

Went to test and tune today and made 2 passes. First one about what I expected, 10.81. @ 124. On the 2nd one there was a 'blip' on the 2-3 shift. Hard to describe but almost like shifting out of gear and back into gear in a fraction of a second. Anyway, the run was almost identical to the first one, 10.80 @ 125. Returned to the pits, loaded up my stuff and headed home. As soon as I got on the road and started to accelerate I knew something wasn't right. No noise or vibration but at 2000 rpm I was only going 40 mph. Should have been around 46 or 47. The converter is a PTC unit that I bought way back to use with the 403. It was perfect behind that engine but not the best behind the new 463. Is it possible that I damaged this converter in a way that would cause it to act like it was super loose? This is uncharted territory for me. Any ideas?

Does it act loose if you drive it held in 1st gear?

If it flairs on the gear change that is usually the trans, not the converter.

No testing as of yet. Just wanted to get home in one piece. Will have more time next week.

John, not familiar with the term 'flairs'. What in the trans would cause that?

I agree with John, if it seem to slip on the shift it's the trans not the converter.

Clutches smoked. Happens on the gear shift. Shift, engine flairs or revs then grabs. Clutches smoked.

John, thanks for the explanation. I think that is exactly what happened on that 2-3 shift when I knew that something was not right.

I believe when the sprag gets rolled you loose 2nd gear. I also have seen Techs measure the hub on the direct drum for a spec size. My understanding is to replace the drum once the sprag is rolled on the drum. The 4L80E drum is a good upgrade with 34 element sprag. Upgrade the piston while in there to billet aluminum, and remove the second sealing ring for a dual feed. There is a few other mods for dual feed. Also replace the snap ring to a spiral locking ring.

Check for pink fluid; if pink then aluminum Stator got a stripped sprag.
Check for smokey fluid: frictions getting heat.

Probably just a low fluid level. Or a clogged filter.

Unless the convertor had an issue and pumped crap into the tranny! How I picked up over 0.5 seconds with a new loose convertor and a fresh trans!

Skip, more details? I know I need a new converter more suited to the new engine. Maybe have the th350 gone through and refreshed and then a better converter. If the budget will allow!

I had Trans King in Galveston redo an 8" convertor for me. After a number of passes with my first roller E head motor started slipping. We were just going to swap transmission. Pieces came out of the convertor! Only one i had laying around was a n A-1 I had loosened for the old RAIV 400 that was in the car. Swapped it and a Phoenix TH350 I got form a Buick buddy and the car really woke up! Flashed to 5000 but had 1.5s 60 fts. It was so loose it would flash up the 3000 pulling p on the trailer.

Joe I hope to make it out as well. Had the 350 gone through and the PTC converter restalled to 3000. Will see what happens next.
