Just 1-4.

I was not aware of the billet shift fork pads either. He just asked if I wanted them as they are typically included as a kit when they do the syncros. I said sure.

I think this TKO is supposed to have at least the bronze pads in it but I'll find out when I tear it down a little later. I have to do a T-5 first.

Here are some pics of the old (defective) syncro blocker rings compared to the new ones. The old ones have a pebble like texture vs the slotted texture on the new ones. I tested them on the cones for friction/resistance to rotation and didn’t feel a measurable difference so hopefully there is a difference in real operation. I’m waiting on the bronze shift fork pads to wrap up the assembly.

Wanted to update this- I installed the updated version of the carbon lined blocker rings last winter and per instructions from MDL, drove for over 500 miles to break in. After doing so I drained and filled with Pennzoil Synchromesh. I can now shift at 5500 rpm with no grinding in 3rd, like before.

Good to hear. I forgot all about this. I finally got around to doing the one we talked about, I guess it's been 2 weeks ago now.

When I tested the new rings on the cones they were all very grippy compared to the rings I took out. So I knew it was going to be an improvement. I'm probably just reaching the break in period now, I'll have to check. Drives great.

Hi Larry - I noticed the same on install - definitely more friction with the slotted design!

Crap. My APT invoice is from 2019, so suspect I don't have the newer ones.

Guess I'm in the same boat, and will have to tear into it. Luckily, it hasn't been installed yet.

Any idea of the cutoff date on the 'defective' items?

Are there specific part numbers, or will they know what I'm talking about?

Mine was on layaway and paid off in 2019. I am of course long out of warranty and mine does it. I will be doing this repair further down the road

These companies are aware of the problem. Whether there was a cutoff date I'm not sure. Seems to have been a mixed bag because some I installed were fine. I guess it depends on which supplier they used at the time of assembly because it's my understanding it was only one supplier of synchros that were faulty. Other suppliers differed slightly and we're fine.

Only a couple ways to know for sure. Either disassemble and look at a synchro, there is a distinct difference in design as you can see in the pics. Or just install and run it, see how it acts. Worth a call to your supplier though to see if they are helpful first.

It's really not a bad job to do. Worse part is packing the needle bearings to get 5th back together. Take your time and you'll find it fairly straight forward.

I had mine out and done in a couple hours

Forgot to mention, there is a pretty stout snap ring that has to come off the main shaft. If I remember it's in front of the 3-4 assembly. Takes a pretty robust snap ring plier to get a hold of it. Probably could be done with a small setup and couple small screw drivers mixed with some cuss words lol

Yeah, will have to call APT, no biggie. Better I know now than after I install it!

I have a bunch of leftover tools from my Munchie days, could do one in my sleep just about, think I'm good on that end.
