Default 4sp shifter

Which shifter was used for the '69 4sp cars? Did they use a ball, if so, what color was it? Anybody have any pics?

TIA,

Mike

jeffp, thanks for the pick, I assume the wood knob is an option?

69 and 70 definitely had only the wood knob. (wood wheel is an option though) NOt sure about 1971 though. Cars came through with wood and plastic.

Keith, I dug out my parts book and it lists the Black ball for 69-70 GP and leather wrapped for '71. The shifter lever # for '69-'70 GP is the same as a '65-66' big car shifter and also '70 Tempest/GTO. Is this even close?

The '69 I'm looking at has the black ball and looks to be the correct shifter...they sure look alot shorter than my '68 GTO's shifter, although it probabaly isn't.

Default Chrome stick, correct for 1969 & 1970 GP all w/4 speed

Here is a photo of an original chrome stick out of a 1969-70 GP, the Hurst part number on the bottom of the stick is 4555.

No 69-70 GP had black ball knob, 4 speed had walnut with black button showing shift gate in silver with black letters, three speed had woodgrain with red PMD emblem on it. "Leather" wrapped with black button is for Trans Am, second gen, not sure which was on 69 TA, I think it was wood with red button. The rest of the GP contingent can chime in here about the shifter knobs.

Pete knows shifter levers and applications better than anyone.

Keith is correct, the '69 & '70 4-speed should have a walnut knob with a black background lucite center and the shift pattern in silver. I'm sure some GP's had their original knobs swapped out later for the GTO black ball type knob.

Thanks all for the info, I can't figure out why the parts book specifically lists a black ball for '69-70 GP's...wrong again I guess.

Check the copyrite date on the parts book, if later date some parts get the "substitution" part instead of the "correct" part, esp after correct part out of production.

Mike, you are correct about what the parts catalog reflects. I'm sure that is a misprint in the catalog. I've ran across this before and made some notes about it. I hope this makes sense! I have a July of 1972 dated Pontiac parts catalog and it reads like this.....

Under 4-speed manual, group 4.006.....

68-69 F/6-F/8-T/6-T/8 4 SPD.....9794505 knob (black)

69-70 GP/8 4 SPD.....9796244 knob (black) ***** This may be a misprint and should read (walnut-w/shift pattern)??? Otherwise should be 9794505 knob (black). Also, the dealer net price on the 9796244 is exactly the same as the 9794300 walnut knob below. Interesting!!! black knob 9794505 price $2.26, walnut knob 9794300 $7.65.

69 All 4 SPD exc. GP/8.....9794300 knob (walnut-w/shift pattern)

71 All G/ 4 SPD.....481595 knob (simulated leather)

70-73 F/8 4 SPD.....481595 knob (simulated leather)

70-73 All A-V/8 4 SPD.....9794505 knob (black)

68-70 All 4 SPD.....9794299 NUT, g/s knob ret. (w / wooden knobs)

Here's a picture of my shift knob that I just took....

Interesting,
the photo from jeffp shows a 4 speed with cruise which was not a factory available combo, probably dealer installed, looks just like the car I used to own, for a second I thought it was mine, all the same options:
black leather, SJ, woodwheel, tilt, stereo, 4spd, tilt, non auto A/C, defroster, only difference I can see is that mine had a dash tach instead of the clock.

back in the 80's my friend had a 79 4spd pheonix (rear drive nova based) and it had the same shift bezel but on a leatherette knob rather than wood.

Good eyes North. The PHS docs that the previous owner received proved that the car was not originally a four speed. It started out as a 428 auto and is now a mildly built 462 four speed.

When I referred to the PHS docs in my post above I meant that there were no optional knobs shown in the list of accessories and I knew from research that I had the correct knob.

JeffP,

Forgot to say what a nice looking car (interior anyway) that is, What color is the outside?

Always found it interesting that Pontiac went to the trouble of having that different standard shift knob for a few hundred GP's when they had the equally nice optional wood knob from the A and F bodies that would have served the same purpose. The enigma of GM I guess.

A trivia question for anyone out there: What knob did a 3spd manual GP have?

Thanks John, the GP is Starlight Black. You shouldn't have asked. Now I have to bore you with a few pics.

On the trivia question I don't have a clue as I have never seen a three speed. I wouldn't mind having one though.

Grant, I show the same info...I wasn't paying attention to the price which is a dead give away. Thanks again.

North, for '69-'70 I show Walnut, less shift pattern for 3 speed floor shift.

3 speed has pmd insignia on the knob, no shift pattern. IF it wasn't so damn cold I"d go out to the garage now and take a pic. I put one on my 70 Le mans, looks great withthe wood dash rather than the plastic ball. I'll post a pic of the three speed knob tomorrow.

Default 1969-70 GP 3 speed knob

Here is the 3 speed wood knob which was an extra cost option on the A & F body series cars but came standard on the GP with manual 3 speed floor shift transmission.
