The idea behind it was to make a casting that looked like the iron version. Something that Edelbrock and KRE doesn't do.
I believe the thought was with the scarcity of the real thing, and the prices they bring, it might be a possible selling point for an aftermarket "look-a-like" version. Several dozen people were on board, but apparently nothing came of it. |

Do you really think if the market for them was big enough they wouldn’t make them? Seems the upfront cost is not worth the risk.

Too bad the Edelbrock weren't close enough , someone could do a cnc program or something to make them look more as cast heads. Or spend a lot of time to do it by hand

Yep I've looked into that. It's going to take a bit of work and money to do it, but it's doable.

Anyone that was going to take on the project im betting would try to improve them some so angled plugs would be a first change.Tom

Im not the one looking for them, I just think more could be done than just adding numbers and letters if someone wanted to spend the time and money.

More was done. Look at the end of the heads compared to stock e-heads

yes, I know looks like a freeze plug. I was talking more the the contouring on the exhaust. instead of just a flat surface.

Just depends how much you're or someone is willing to spend. More time on the cnc the more it'll cost.

If someone cast 50 sets of 614s in iron-steel with fast burn chambers like the High Port with the same plug location with extra room to port I think they would sell out. Its just my opinion but we all know what a success Edelbrock with their aluminum Pontiac head. Enough so they could over charge us for years selling other less popular heads for less.
It might take a little time to sell them, but they would sell. |

Found a set but the heat crossovers have steel welded in. I've seen Aluminum used but not steel welded in. Anyone seen this before?

Yes. Long time again, a freind had a set of d-ports with the exhaust cross over welded.. They looked really good. But unfortunately he never ran them.

Dan welded up my HOs and I welded up some 96s myself. You need Ni rod that is dissimilar metal and has a non conductive coating.

old thread, here's the thing...
the guys that used to make the cylinder head molds for Pontiac and GM, were true artisans, and craftsmen, in the old world sense. to make a sandcast mold for the heads, they first had to make a rough cylinder head from wood, then that wooden head is used, to make the sandcast, then the sandcast is assembled into a mold, and the molten iron poured in. the exterior as-cast surfaces you see on the exhaust side, were first HAND WHITTLED from a block of wood. that's why they look so cool, all those shapes in the porting, interior and exterior. so, they made a head from wood, made a sandcast around it, then assembled the sandcast mold, by hand, then poured the molten iron in, to fill in the space, where the wooden head was before. that's what gave the Pontiac heads that cool adobe look. because, in reality, they were adobe. cast iron, hand crafted adobe. these guys made like 7 bucks an hour or so back in the old days. you can't afford it today. it's 85-100 bucks an hour or more. just to make a mold, that gets destroyed to make a cylinder head. you'd have to get 10 grand per head to make them that way today, just for the bare head. so in reality, RA II IV V HO SD heads, are a bargain today. be happy you can even find them, and buy them. want a head that looks like that ? then make a mold from an original head, and pour it. stop trying to improve it. if you find King Tut's coffin, or the Holy Grail, you don't try to improve it. you preserve it. if you find the Mona Lisa painting, you don't try to touch it up to make it look better. that completely destroys its value.
