I have a 400cid auotomatic 70 GTO. It starts fine, runs great, everthing appears to be just right. However, after ten minetes or so of regular running, the starter doesn't want to turn over. I can wait a few and the car will start. Battery is hot, alternator is putting out, what's the scoop? Anybody got clues?

Casey,
Classic hot start problem on Pontiacs is caused by the super heating of the starter solenoid (assuming good electrical system and TIGHT CLEAN connections), and is worse with headers . My favorite fix is to replace the oe starter with a Hi-Torque brand mini-starter ($175) which has considerably more torque, and laughs @ the heat. Lower cost alternatives include relocating the solenoid (use a Ford type) to the cooler firewall, or wrap the starter with a Kool-Tec insulation blanket ($30 each). Ran into this problem years ago. The problem is in the solenoid. The spring that goes inside of it can be of several different wire diameter, etc. The electrical power must overcome this spring tension. Find a spring with small wire diameter or cut your spring down by at least one coil. You only need enough to return the bendix. Can test on the bench. GM even sells a small wire diameter spring, or at least they did.Good luck

I went with the remote unit on the firewall, and i wrapped the starter with a heat blanket. Everything is good to go now, would recommend this treatment.

I still run a factory system on mine. After replacing worn out wires and ensuring a good ground, I've not had one problem even on hot summer days.

I had the same problem with my '70. Had the starter rebuilt and no problems. Just got an original '76 GP, and it has the same problem...

Same problem, '70 GTO. Turned out I had two issues - Weak solenoid and car ran too hot. Had to replace a radiator that was shot, replaced the starter, and put a solenoid heat shield on it to protect from header heat (available at Y1).
