Default Upgrade progression

Okay, here we go. After buying a 04 CTS-V I have decided that my Tempest could use some more umph!

Currently this is what is there. 406, 6X-4s unported but milled to 90cc's, stock Q-Jet, XE268, and a HEI. Out back is a TKO600 and a 3.90 rear with 27.2in tires.

I am going to wait until I can get to the track and get a base line before I start on anything.

First: Rebuilt 800 q-jet set up as recomended by Cliff.

Second: Port heads to 230/240cfm range ala-Jim Hand

Third: Possibly a Crower 60243 and rhoads V-max w/SL or just the 60243
or
Go ahead and put in a 4.0 stroke crank?

Sound Okay? Right now the Q-jet and heads are all I am seriously planning on.

I think it is a good cam for a low compression (9:1 or lower) 400 or smaller cid motor. It is not going to pull past 5000 and really drops off after 5200. Does seem to have a strong mid range in my car anyway.

Sell the 6X-4s and get a set of KRE heads. Use the 60919 Crower cam with rhodes lifters. Q-Jet, RPM intake, 1-3/4" headers and 3" exhaust. Assuming you have a short block and budget that can take it.

How do you like the 3.90 gear with the TKO-600? I ask because I also have a TKO-600 and a 27" tall tire in my 76 T/A but I decided to go with the 3.73 in my Moser 12 bolt. I really like the 3.73's but I've wondered what the 3.90's would have been like.

What Chiphead said, and/or spray it. Those two options will give you an immedaite return of investment! Build a engine aside from that one if you choose to spray it, make that one a stroker.

I am glad that I went with the 3.90 instead of the 3.73 or higher. With the 3.90s I run right at 2150rpm at 70mph. That sets pretty much the lower 1/4 to 1/3 of my torque band. With the TKO gearing through the 3.90s it comes off of the line real good. I still have some suspension work to do yet, to get the launch to work right. If I get good traction on the 1 to 2 shift, and really hammer it, I get some pretty bad wheel hop. It only does that when you go full bore all the way through first and then hammmer second. Just waiting for warmer weather.
