Default '70 Tempest 4dr Post XX-code 400 Production Numbers?

Does anyone have any knowledge of the production numbers for the 400 motors in the '70 Tempests & LeMans', 2-bbl & 4-bbl? Reason being my brother and I bought the Tempest 4dr Sedan from John Hugentober this past weekend and found out once we got it home that it is an XX-code 400 2-bbl/TH400. The best clue was under our noses all the time. All we had to do was look at the trim tag and could have seen M40 listed along with a couple 'B' body trim numbers. This is an Oshawa built car (9E - Sept. 5th week) and delivered to Eastman Motors in Stamford, Connecticut. It sat until March 18, 1970. It has the dealer invoice and a tag attached to the seat spring of the rear seat cushion both listing all the options.

The body is really solid with a few small weak areas in the floor, trunk seams, rockers, and rear quarters/whell houses. The interior is pretty nice considering the age and fragile fabric Pontiac used on the Tempests. The car has its original rubber flooring and front & rear floor mats. The headliner and ear-muffs are nice, as is the dash (gold and ventless). Other options are remote mirror, am radio, tinted windshield, the Decor Group (deluxe steering wheel, wheel covers, wheel opening mouldings, rocker mouldings, pedal trim, concealed wipers, dual horns, and wood grain instrument panel), Power Assist Group (power steering, power disc brakes, and turbo hydramatic), door edge guards, white wall G78-14 tires, and front & rear floor mats (which it still has!).

The original intention was to use this car to rebody the LeMans 4-spd car, but can't now so it must join the fleet as a factory freak. It needs all the hard & soft brake lines and fuel lines, a good overall cleaning, and engine tuning. The odometer reads 68,000 miles and there is no reason to doubt it. We are hoping a good tune and fluid changes are all it will need to be able to drive it soon.

Default Interior Pics

The door panels are beautiful and the dash is almost perfect. The front seat has a nice tight seatcover over the original fabric, so we'll keep it on for now.

Default Body & Trunk

The trunk has the remnants of the factory trunk pad stuck to the floor, so looks worse than it is. The mice made a real nice home under the spare tire adn ruined the jack and base. The underside of the trunklid shows the original shiney Granada Gold paint and jacking instructions.

I believe the number is 240 XX 400 2bbl Tempests built in 1970.

I had a 2 door that had been turned into a Judge clone with a 72 front clip.

Dennis, is the body number 3369?

If so, the docs I have from the GM Heritage Center say 84 400-2 cars.

The document is hand-written and not printed so I can only assume it's correct. As a point of reference, it shows 804 RAIV GTOs and 88 455 Trans Ams, with the latter obviously also being placed in the wrong column. Caveat!

Hey Deigo, it is 23369. Can you post a copy of the production numbers? That would be interesting to see.

I like the 84 number. Its a lot less than I thought.

It has great cruising gears with 2.56. It should only turn 2000 rpm at 60 mph.

I do not have permission to post the documents - sorry! I can show you in a few months, however.

Diego, that's OK. Do you know how many by body type for both Tempests & LeMans for both the L65 & L74 400's?

Chris, that is a strage hybrid for a Judge clone, but a cool car none-the-less.

It was an odd duck for sure but left soon enough.

Was it L74 or L78? I wish the search function was working, then I could figure out where my 240 number came from. I had that car March of last year - only paid $1,200 for it.

Chris,

Whatever the 330 hp XV-code 400-4bbl motor is...L74 or L78, whatever it takes (line borrowed from Mister Mom w/ Micheal Keaton). I can never remember the motor codes for the life of me.

Daymn, $1200 is cheap for the ultra rare '72 Tempest Judge! I'd love to take that car to the GTOAA or POCI to hear the experts berate it.

Here's an excerpt from a 70-71 break down:

This is not broken down any more though, like for 2 door coupe, etc.

Johnta1,
The '70 Tempest order form lists the L65 motor as 346, very close to the 34G from your excerpt. It looks like the end numbers for the '71 column didn't print, so is the total A-body L65 production 40XX-something? It would be a little less production than the '70 model year of 4371 cars w/L65's.

I'm I correct with the math that 4371/0.022 = 198,682 total A-body (3300, 3500, & 3700) production for 1970?

This would be for all the 400 2bbl engines, there were 6 engine codes, including XX.
I think the manual tranny 400 2bbl is WE for the Tempest?

johnta1,
From what I see on the order form, it was TH400 only in the A-body line and I believe the F-body as well. The B-bodys could get the manual trans from what I understand.

Does anyone have the total non-GTO A-body production figure for 1970? Is it 198,600-ish?

no 400 2bbl manual transmissions, just T400's.

True, for A-body/Birds, no manual tranny 400 2bbl.

Cool Yep...

I had a '69 GTO XX code...one of 215...or 216...depending on whose figures you liik at. Oddly enough...PHS showed the car as a YS 4-bbl. car...but it was purchased from the original owner and the VIN was on the XX block. Car also had the hole punched and grommet for Hide-Away vacuum harness but was a fixed-headlight car. Just an FYI. BTW...also had 2.56 "economy" gears and only available with the TH 400. Oddly enough...it was an air conditioned ragtop with NO tinted glass...which almost invariably came on air cars. I'm thinking the options got changed on this car after it had already started down the line...but that is speculation on my part.

Ron, I assume yours was a ragtop?

Anyway, here's what I have for the L65:

3327 61
3337 95
3369 84

3527 77
3535 79
3536 251
3537 980
3539 111
3569 262

3727 35
3736 345
3737 1705
3739 147
3767 139
-----
TOTAL 4371

If someone could be kind enough to use the calculator and see if the models total 4371, that would make me happy. :-)
