Big difference. Brakeclean is a very fast evaporating cleaning liquid much like alcohol. It was designed to wash away brake dust without soaking into rubber seals and pads/shoes and damaging them. Carb cleaners evaporate much slower and do a better job at loosening/removing heavy deposits. Some carb cleaners will leave behind an oily film and are NOT to be used for cleaning brake drums/rotors. Carb cleaners will also swell rubber dust seals and ruin calipers and wheel cylinders. Gumout for example does not dry without residue. Berkibile 2 + 2 carb cleaner is among the best out there, far superior to the 99 cent per can budget varieties. It will dry without a film and remove the most stubborn of greasy deposits. Hope this helps some....Cliff

Thanks Cliff

I was told to use brake cleaner and not rags, towels, colths or any of the sort, so-as to not have any possible lint to clog a valve or filter, while re-building my tranny.
Thanks, again Cliff. Now I know the difference. I assume both are safe to use around aluminum?

Brake clean is perfect for cleaning transmissions during rebuilding. Washes out the debri and dries quickly. Neither one will hurt aluminum....Cliff
