Default 400 auto tranny shifter issue

This is in my 72 Lemans. Original rebuilt tranny, and first time in car for me. If I shift from drive to neutral (where it stops), it's still in drive. I have to push down on top of shifter to push forward more to find reverse. How do I remedy that?

Loosen back-drive adjuster and get the shift cable/lever adjusted right first.

Then adjust back-drive so column lock works. Along with neutral safety and back-up lights.

I did the adjustment by the book. I did eventually get my back up lights to work correctly. I just needed to adjust the neutral safety switch a bit. It seems I need more adjustment at the tranny lever. As in a bit more slot opening to slide my shift cable back a bit more. The tranny shifts into neutral at the shifter stop from reverse fine. But, going from drive to reverse, the shifter hits its stop, but hasn't quite shifted the tranny to actual neutral,
