better check the width.A 57-58 might fit better.I think you could do better like a 9in.Tom

nothing is more correct than the 57-64 olds/pontiac rear in your hotrod..9 inch fords belong in , well, fords...the mounts are not hard to fab..narrowing a rear isnt rocket science either..once built this piece is damn near bulletproof..gear ratios are not as ez to find as a 9", but you can get close enuf to where you will never feel the difference..

the "cool factor" is unlimited and priceless..

ok,reality.Big car rear end parts are damn hard to find in good shape and very expensive.Side gears for a 59-64 big car are virtually impossible to get if you break one.A posi pumpkin goes for $800 ish if in good shape. If you dont want to do the right thing(9in),get a Currie or other bullet proof 10 or 12 bolt that will be a direct boltin.Just a opinion from someone that has big car reaar ends in two cars and 3 Xtra posi pumpkins and X tra side gears and posi parts in my garage.Tom

I put in a '63 Bonneville rear end in my '65 Tempest project earlier this year. I built a simple jig and narrowed the housing myself. Lots of careful measuring, then tack welds, them test fit, etc. Then I cut the lower arm mounts off the tempest rear. measured and welded in place. To mount the upper arms, I just fabbed them out of some 3/4" steel. My acual cost was about nothing, just my time. I think it was the best way to go and keep it as much Pontiac as I can. I will buy all my needed inside parts from Brad at Fabcraft metalworks in Texas. He specializes in these Pontiac rears. I believe they are 9 1/4" ring gear.
I saved money and I learned something doing it myself. I plan to narrow another eary rear for another project I have too. The first time is always the hardest. That is what hot rodding is all about, doing stuff yourself as much as you can.
Best to you with your project.

Steve

Seeing as this is the race forum, the use of a spool should be the prefered option if you asked me.

Side gears be damned.

Agree with talking to Brad @ fabcraft for the hard to find bits, also Mark Williams and Strange both carry certain various heavy duty odds and ends.

Strange and Mark Williams both make a spools for these, and MW makes a HD rear cap for these, both also offer HD yokes for 1350 joints, point being the important HD stuff is available for race applications,it's the "street" stuff that's a bit harder to come by.

Though the "pro-gear" selection could be better for the race guys,,,most all that stuff is like 4.88 and up...

HD axles are NBD either,as stated any company can make a set of those, the housing ends are commonly available too.

Also,if a fella is considering narrowing and welding on the housing,I would advise him to use some caution, dont cut corners, use a proper housing jig for the process and make sure the housing comes out straight, your high $$$$ parts will thank you for that later on I assure ya'll.

Currie has a kit with all the mounts and spring pads. Part # CE-7011B. $150
I used a 62 rear in my 65 gto. Went with a 35 spline strange spool and street/strip axles. Strange also has the housing ends so you can use any brakes you want. I went with the small gm ends with ford 9" end bearings so I could use my 65 gto brakes and wheels. That way it was easy to measure the old 65 rear and cut the 62 rear to the exact dimensions as the 65. The rear wheels already had the correct offset so everything remained the same.

I put a 57/64 in my 63 Tempest S/G because it was correct to the era. I didn't think it was that expensive. I got some stuff from Terry Spidel 765-534-4140 and some from Fabcraft.

Mark Williams does make spools, gears, and a few more parts for the BOP rear.
I think GM blew it when the stopped making it.It could have been our 9 inch only better. It has a larger ring gear and is a strong rear in its own right.
Durring the musle car era GM had the weakest of all the rears.Mopars had the Dana 60,Ford had the 9 inch and GM was stuck with 10 and 12 bolts.
I broke 2 10 bolts in my GTO before I stuck a 9 inch in it.Then broke a Trac Lock and a Detroit Locker in my 9 inch before I put a spool in it.And now I have bent my 9 inch housing launching the car.Going to have to straighten it out and weld a back brace on it.That or go with a new housing and start over.
Remember,Pontiac ran Ford Top Loader 3 speeds in thier cars in the mid 60s.So its not unheard of the run some Ford parts in your Pontiac if you have to.And the guys that go realy fast have no choice. You can only beef up a 12 bolt so much.
There is the Dana 60 option nowdays. The make lightweight versions that are as light as a 9 inch. And a Dana 60 is stronger than a 9 inch.
