Default Location of gas tank ground and insulators - 73 TA

Where does the ground wire attach to the gas tank? Also where do the insulator strips go? Why oh why don't I take more pictures when I take things apart?

Ground wire is spot welded to the fuel sender and attaches to the body at the rear of the car near one of the gas tank straps(can't remember if its left or right??) Insulator strips go on the top of the gas tank in the two long depressions. There is usually a square insulator pad in the middle also.

Ground is on pass side , as Dens said right near where the stud comes out for the strap on that side, near the tail pan. It has a small sheet metal screw and a star washer

I must have broken the connection on the fuel sender when I removed the tank. can I ground it on the fuel sender plate, or does it need to be on the fuel sender connection? Or, do I have to buy a new fuel sender?

very common to drop the tank and forget that one stupid little wire ;~). You should be able to either put a new terminal end on the wire and lightly tack it to the send plate, or solder the wire back to it.

If you take the tank down again, , some were just plugged into a tab on newer replacement senders. make sure the wire to the terminal or "plug" is soldered, not just crimped, then slide it on. I would aslo put a bit of marine grease on it to stop and trapped moisture up there from rusting it.

Whilst not exactly "factory", these were the areas that were covered with the original anti rubbing material. I replaced the worn out factory stuff with closed cell urethane self adhesive foam.

To resurrect this thread:

Does anyone know the thicknesses of the two insulator strips that fit in the tank depressions? Also how thick is the rectangular insulating block in the middle of the tank. I am working on my 1970 tank, if that makes a difference.

I too took pictures of my disassembly, but did not save the pieces or take measurements of these pieces. (see attached pic).

Again thanks for the help!

Also Leigh, where did you get your replacement material?

Anyone have any recommendations for finding replacement materials for these insulators?

The two long black rubber strips

3893119 Anti-squeak

The one single block

3863930 Insulator - it says 1.10 +/- .06 and 2.66 +/- .06, but instead of a width those might have been a distance from a feature on the tank.

It does not say how tall the pieces were. Two possible sealers or two possible cements to hold them on. They were not too fussy about that from the look of it.

The second one, the insulator, might have been adjusted to fit while the cement was still wet or if they had an obvious squeaker they might drop the tank and quick slip in a thicker insulator if there was an issue during inspection. Just a hunch. I suspect the first two were already there before general assembly, at least.

After looking and thinking a bit more about my questions, I am coming to these conclusions:

(1) the thickness of the long pieces in the recessed troughs, probably needs to be equal or slightly more than the depth of the trough.

(2) the thickness of the block is probably equal to or slightly more than the height of the fuel lines leaving the gas tank sender.

Both of these conclusions, would allow no metal to metal contact from the tank to the trunk bottom floor surface.

Any thoughts?

I'll chime in and say that sounds about right to me Steve. Just a wild guess I was going to say about 1/8" thick for the two long pieces and somewhere around 3/8" to 1/2" thick on the single small block. Didn't seem like it was much more than about 1/2" thick. I stupidly got rid of my old tank once I got the new tank so I can't take measurements of my originals, but I could post a pic from the 1971 and possibly the 1970 assembly manual if it would be of any help.

I think I took some pics of my 71 in my thread on here, I left everything intact as far as the pad and the strap insulators, they went back on because they were in great shape. if I don't have pics on there I did take some pics and can post them, the car had not really been touched and had been sitting since 86 or so when it started to become garage art.

I have the assembly manual, but it does not give any thicknesses. I was guessing 1/16" as well and around 3/8" as well. That will be the plan!

Last one I did for a friend who had his own, it was a closed cell foam truck cap tape. worked well and compressed to thickness needed, cant be seen . Just an idea aside from 2 layers of grace water shield ( which worked well too)
Both are sticky back
Can make them from underlayment material if you have some as well
