I just finished replacing the seat back chrome piping on my
79 Trans Am as the originals were starting to turn brown from old age.
Ames sells the replacement piping that snaps on to the original GM seatbacks
with no adhesive required. I was pleased to discover that they can be installed
without removing the seat backs, making it a 15 minute job to do both seats.
They are designed to be a little long on the ends, so you will want to install them then cut the ends to the right length with a sharp pair of diagonal wire cutters.
The one gripe about them is that at the bottom ends where they curve towards
the front of the seats the curve is not quite as sharp as it needs to be for a perfect fit, but once you get them on they look fine.

I thought at one time they had 2 options for that part. One was 'good' the other was supposed to be factory correct. Which did you use?

I used the factory correct ones that are molded like the originals to
snap onto the original seat backs.....they have no adhesive built into them....they are just like the originals. The curves are molded into them and they will not
bend.The cheap stuff is flexible with gooey glue inside them that after a while starts oozing out everywhere. On the GTO buckets, the correct molding will only
snap onto the original GM seat backs. If you have repro GTO seat backs you have
no alternative but to use the cheap stuff with the gooey adhesive. I am not sure
if the new seat backs that Ames sells for Trans Ams are made correctly so that the correct
chrome trim can be used......I did not ask them that question. Both my Trans Am
and my GTO have perfect original NOS seat backs that I bought decades ago
so I'm using the correct snap on chrome trim on both cars.
