79 Firebird help
This past weekend I took my 79 Formula out for a ride. Part of the ride involved driving up a mountain road. Part way up the mountain the engine stated to cut out then catch and cut out. It did this under medium load. Not full acceleration. I'm not sure if it's a fuel delivery issue or ignition issue. I did a frame on of my Formy. I put a new fuel pick up screen on when I had the tank down. I also put a new module and pole piece in the distributor along with plugs and wires. This is a 301 engine.

It sounds like a fuel pump problem. It could be electrical, but that's unlikely if it only happens going up hill. The pump effectively has to suck the fuel further going up hill.
One possible way to check for a fuel pump issue is to gradually build up speed before a hill and then don't give any gas, just letting momentum carry you over the hill. If there aren't any problems, try the same thing driving normally. If it doesn't pull the hill driving normally, there's probably a fuel or fuel-pump issue. It's not fool-proof, but it can help isolate the problem. There could also be a part throttle problem in the power circuit in the carb, but that generally wouldn't cause it to cut out, just miss or lose power. If it was my car, I'd probably just change the fuel pump.

How much altitude change was there? did it run ok again when you came down? That may be an issue?

How steep was the hill and how much gas was in your tank?

Not that high. Some of you out west may call it a hill. An incline none the less.

also make sure you vent line is ok, not pinched either
since you mentioned taking the tank out could also be an internal sock issue in the tank but i'd also check the carb float level too or tuning on the carb |
