Default 2017 Pontiac Powered Class Racing

Well, there is now less than a month 'til the 2017 NHRA season begins, with the Winternationals !

There are several familiar Pontiac racers on the pre-entry list.

Good luck to all Pontiac powered racers this year !

Because of that 10.34 blast, back in November, Brad Burton got a 12hp hit, from NHRA.

I assume he'll still run a Formula hood, but without open scoops, correct ?

Don't think that engine came in a flat hood '72 Bird.

ESPN 3 has live coverage of the IHRA event, in Fla, and will also have live coverage of other IHRA races, this year.

Just looked it up on nhra site and it shows 300 hp 455 non ram air firebird
he's good to go. The hood is a good way to slow it down know and protect the lower hp engine for when he needs it that thing is still fast even at 352 hp.

Yeah, the Class Racer Info site shows that a 455HO non-RA engine is factored at 335hp in a '72 Formula & T/A.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...9&MAKE=Pontiac

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...px?ENGINE=2069

According to this site, the 455HO is the only legal 455 in a '72 Bird. And those are not legal in a base model or Esprit--only the Formula & T/A.

In fact, this site shows that no 4-barrel engine is legal in a flat hood '72 Bird.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...px?ENGINE=2068

The 7K3 head 4-barrel 400 is legal in a Formy.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...px?ENGINE=2067

Don't know how accurate this info is. Anybody know of a '72 flat hood Bird that came with a 4-barrel engine ?

Not in 72 that I know of.

The 400 2bbl may still have been available in the Esprit?

What's the ET for that is I wonder?

"...The 400 2bbl may still have been available in the Esprit?..."

Yeah, looks like the 400 2-barrel is legal in a '72 esprit. But, with a 265hp factor, that combo would not be competitive.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...px?ENGINE=2065

But, a low compression 400 4-barrel Pontiac engine is competitive, in some years. The '77 Pontiacs, with both the 350 & 400 engines are competitive and have posted many national records & class wins to prove it. But, they have 6x heads, an 800cfm Q-jet, and decent NHRA hp factors. I'm sure some of the non-Pontiac competitors think those hp factors are "soft".

"...What's the ET for that is I wonder? "

Looks like the weight break is 12.93. So, it could run the 12.0, 12.50, or 13.0 weight break class. That would make the index 12.30, 12.45, & 12.65 respectively.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/NHRA_Classes.aspx

Don't know if anybody could get a low comp, small valve, 2-barrel 400 to go quicker than that or not. My guess is that the hp factor would have to be much lower, to make this engine competitive. Anybody here have any experience trying to make a 2-barrel 400 quick ?

I had to run a 2-barrel Roch on some dirt trackers. But, all the GM cars had to run one. There are a few competitive cars running the 2-barrel Roch. But most are sbc engines. Don't know of a single 2-barrel Pontiac stocker. There were quite a few with 3-dueces, but I'm not aware of a single 2 drag car--at least not in the modern era.

The Winternationals is underway. This site has some video.

https://www.facebook.com/Class-Racer...9441468406709/

The Winternationals always remind me of the A/FX Tempests. M/T's 1st class winner was actually lettered FX/A, driven by Hayden Proffitt.

The same car also won class at the US Nats that year, with Loyd Cox driving. His wife also won the S/SA class, in a Pontiac.

Randi Lyn & Ryan Schloe survived round 1 of Stock.

In SS, Keri Angeles won her 1st round, but Leo lost to a perfect .000 light.

Randi Lyn ran her dial & cut a better light, for a round 2 win. So, she has the only Pontiac Stocker which will advance.

http://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCSt...er=30#indextop

In SS, Kerri cut a better light, but blew an engine.

Randi Lyn cut a better light, but broke, off the line.

http://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCSt...UMMIT#indextop

All the Pontiacs are out, but we did get a #1 qualifier ! So, Pontiac power is off to a decent start, in 2017 NHRA competition.

The next action comes in 2 weeks at the National Event in AZ & the Div 2 opener, in Fla.

http://www.racewildhorse.net/index.p...nhra-nationals

Orlando Speed World Dragway is even using Adam Davis' yellow Bird in their ad for the div 2 race.
