I have read posts aboyt others having to mill their Victors, mine was a perfect fit. But the SECOND Performer I have needs about a 0.070-0.080 mill to line up. First one was my virgin orginal 78 motor(no decking, no milling), latest one block was decked and heads milled but they also had the intake surface milled. Funny my Performer RPM non milled fits it perfect.
My machine shop said they have to do that to most of the Edelbrock intakes the past few years even on Chevies.

Yep. Wilson had to do a fair amount of work to my Victor to make it right.

There use to be a guy at the Pomona swap meet that sold the factory seconds from Edelbrock. He had a bunch of manifolds. I assume it happens a lot more than people think. I have heard stories where people got the manifolds and they were milled wrong and did not fit the heads right. They claim the Chinese intake manifold copies are better than the Edelbrocks LOL. I don't think they make the copies for Pontiacs but they have just about every Chevy small block model avalable.

Since i haven't set my victor back on the motor just yet, i'm wondering if i should have it milled as well.
It sits a bit high between the heads and doesn't match well to the ra4 port size. the pattern left from the gasket on the intake flange reveal the outline as the top of the ports are even with the upper edge of the gasket/head port, while the bottom edge of the intake ports sit about 1/8" above the gasket. I guess i could just grind on the intake and bring the lower edge of each port down to match the gasket imprint, then it would match the head ports. THe milling would probably help on bolt alignment too. What would be the easiest way to figure the amount of material to be removed from the intake flange, based on the info given? 1973 SD455 T/A 1979 S.E. The last Victor we used was on a friend's 455 with virgin deck surfaces and unmilled 87cc E-heads. We had to cut the Victor intake surfaces .060" on each side to get correct intake port alignment. We used the intake gasket thickness to help determine the cut needed on that one. The gaskets were .062" thick, and without them in place, the intake ports aligned perfectly, so we elected to cut the intake .060", which worked great. I recently assembled a 400 with unmilled 96 castings, and a zero-decked (.028" cut) 400 block. I was expecting to have to mill the Performer RPM manifold for this engine, which I ended up doing, and it took .070" per side to get the intake ports aligned. I thought that was a bit excessive.

My newest Performer doesn't even line up good without the 0.060 gaskets, so I'm going to do a 0.075 cut.

Skip, installed a Victor intake last night on a 455 with E heads. The alignment was PERFECT! I did have to grind the "bumps" down and make a notch in the valve covers for clearance. Last year I had to cut a couple of the RPM intakes for use on 400's with iron heads. They blocks were zero decked and the heads milled slightly. Ended up removing .070" for a good fit......Cliff

Just dropped off the victor to cut .060" off each side.

Skip,
This is the same problem I've been bitchin' about for several years. I put a fresh-outta-the-box Performer on a stock 455. It wouldn't even come close to lining up. I removed the intake gaskets and it fit, so I had the machine shop whack the sides .050. I wanted more, but he INSISTED that my measurements were wrong. It could still use a little shave. Pisses me off when American made stuff is like that. John

I could see having decked blocks and milled heads being off just a little but stock dimensions??
I saw a neat gauge in Circle Track for SBC. It is a V that one side you can set on block and heads to see if they are off. Inside of V hold to intake to tell if it åïff. Seems like a simple idea.

Picked up the vic intake and now it fits well.
I did a gasket match port job and also figured since i had the time I would do some needed radius work off the flange/plenum area. Whether or not it makes a noticable difference, who knows but it sure as hell couldn't hurt. Sure seems(in stock form) that the 90 degree turn the fuel mixture must make into the port runners from the carb is a bit abrupt. Oh yeah,....the car is once again back in service!!! Heres a pic on the intake mods. 1973 SD455 T/A 1979 S.E. T/A http://community.webshots.com/album/16587603rOyvmFCiHs
