Lifting body off chassis help please
Hello GTO guys,
I'm usually over on the 70-73 firebird section but I need some advice about lifting the body off my friends 67 GTO. I plan to help him repair a bad section on his frame, but I do not want to mess his car up. Can I ask some advice on how to properly support the body to be lifted up enough to roll the frame out from underneath. thanks, Eddie

If you have the motor out and the front clip off not that big a deal, unhook all the obvious stuff, body to frame bolts, emergency brake, gas lines, rear bumper has to be off, I would lift the rear first and put a 4x4 right above the rear tires and support on saw horses, do the same on the front under the fire wall, leave enough room to roll out the frame, I did mine years ago but used the lift to do all the work, take your time and have a few friends there to help. good luck jd grim BTDT 66 gto

Thanks JD,
My buddy told me today that he had everything out, interior, engine, trans, etc. with the exception of disconnecting the steering column and removing the trunk lid. I hust want to not hurt anything. It's a really solid car.

I used a chain hoist hooked to a beam to lift the rear and hooked a couple of chains to where the front fenders bolt to the firewall and used an engine hoist to lift the front. Works really easy and one person can do the whole thing. Make sure that the doors are closed or that you have door braces.

I used some cinder blocks and 2 4x4. I lifted one end with a floor jack and added cinder blocks with the 4x4 and went front to back lifting with the floor jack until the body was high enough to role the frame out. I was able to do it by my self doing it this way

There was a thread on here about lifting the car using an engine hoist and a wood beam but I can't find it.
I think they pulled the oblong plugs out of the rear floorboard and ran a chain through them and a wood brace. Then they lifted the whole body. I used an engine hoist and strap to lift the rear up and slid a heavy duty saw horse under it. Then I lifted the front the same way and slid another saw horse under it. I made the saw horses and reinforced them so they wouldn't break.

The best way we have found is to use 4X4's under the rear wheel well & under the firewall area. Once you lift it up enough to get the 4X4's under those areas make sure the 4X4's are long enough to be able to lift it up from the sides with the help of about 4-6 friends Then when it up you can set the ends of the 4X4's on barrels, that way it's up high enough & then you can just roll the frame out with no problems at all. Or there is another way which has 1 more 4X4 you run through the door glass from side to side & tie the 4X4"s together with either chain or cable from the back to the roof area to the front one under the firewall & then you can use the a chain fall & lift it right up by yourself & then again support it with the barrels on the 4X4's at the front & back . Doing it this way will not hurt the roof area as the weight is transfered between the 3 4X4's & the use of the chain or cables. Then again just set it down on the barrels & roll out the frame , this way you can do it by yourself both up & down.
