Crank to flexplate shim
I have always wondered why Pontiac always have a shim between the crank and flexplate (at least from what I have found). Does anyone know? I have always reinstalled it but am wondering if it's necessary.

Not necessary.
There was a service bulletin (can't remember the year?) where they dropped it.

I too always clean and reuse, but not knowing its purpose or function. Only idea was metal hardness/fritting isolator/mitigator. Via clamping friction.

I'm curious why Pontiac felt it was nescessarry to use the shim for so many years. I actually thought it was eliminated with the smaller flywheel register. The part was designed for a "reason". I believe they switched to using that shim at the same time they eliminated the bolt flange support spacer.... Which was designed for a reason also.
