Mini Spool-ok for street use?
I really know nothing about these. Saw an 8.5 bop rear end for sale semi-locally that has one and was curious if this is really a race only type thing. The guy selling it took it out of his race car.
I don't have the cash right now, but he has been trying to sell it for months on Craig's List, so he still might have it when I do if it is something worth getting. Thanks, Russ |

IMO a mini spool is a failure waiting to happen and usually at the most inopportune time and place.

Mini spools work best for dirt track roundy round cars. I've seen them used with some success light weight low horsepower drag cars, but I have also seen a couple of them fail.

Not worth getting, race only, made for dirt track use.

If somebody even spits on the road, any spool is DANGEROUS!

Equivalent to welding the centre up....no use on the road. A soft locker centre would be as far as I'd go on a road car.

I know a guy who runs the mini spool on the street. Every corner he turns the tires squeal or chirp. Don't think you would like it.

This is an innocent question. Not everyone knows what it's like to drive a spool on the street (even for short distances).
It can be flat dangerous, in the least problematic situations. After you've driven a spool on the street you know why the early on car factoriy engineers came up w/ a differential... Yeah, mini spools are for dirt tracking, only...

Okay, thanks. Like I said I know nothing about these things, hence the question. :-)
The ad said it came off his race car, I just assumed he meant drags. I really know nothing about dirt track racing at all. Russ |

Well, I've run a minnie spool in my 65 GTO for years with c-clip eliminators.
11.51 @ 115 mph.

I am running a moser spool on 8.5rear on the street, after a while I dont even know it's there. I have a powertrax in a truck 12 bolt rear and it acts the same. Just the matter of getting used to them.

They change your driving habits for sure.
How much street vs strip? Maybe go'n back to one since have a 4 series posi w/4.11, and need 3.55/3.73. Or a thin 3.73 for 4 series case, which worries me more.

I raced the 65 with a GM 12 bolt posi for several years until it twisted its guts sideways.
Put the minnie spool in & raced the dog **** out of it. The car should be back on the street next week with a pump gas engine. We''ll see how I like it on the street??

I hate bringing this back from the dead, but I am going to.
O.G.R., did you ever get that car back on the street and if so how did you like it with the mini spool? I'm buying a Ford 9inch with one, and am trying to determine if this is something I need to deal with before getting the car back on the street this summer. I know I need to change that out, just not sure how immediately I need to. Apparently the car this came from was being drag raced with it installed. Thanks, Russ |

I ran powertrax lock right locker in my F150 for a while. had to get used to it and change my driving habbits. every once in a while it would lock or break when I was expecting it and the rear would jerk. that was the worste of it. I would do it again as it wasn't to bad once you get the hang of it.
A spool on the other hand. that might be a little strange. at least with the locker i could release the throttle and take a corner semi normal with some clicks. only other way was to power through it. |

One thing no one has brought up is that there is constant flexing and twisting up of the axles unless the car is going dead straight. On the track this doesn't happen all that often in the overall life of the rearend. On the street it is happening more than not. Twisting produces heat, and on the strip you make a few turns, go straight, and make a few turns back to the pit and park until the next round. On the street the heat continues to build up, and is going to contribute to the eventual failure of the axles if the mini-spool doesn't fail first. One way or the other, the clock is ticking.

Ditto. I put a mini spool in my 67 GTO with 3.90 gears when I used to race NMCA Stock ET. It lasted about a season. I was at a BOP race in Bristol, won class, won closest ET contest, and was qualified for King of Hill race when I split the case in half in the first round of eliminations! Do it right and add the Moser Axles too.
Oh and this was on a low 13 second car not a big horsepower application. The car weighed 3960 with me in it. Mark C |

After getting the Camaro moving on it's own with a spool-makes nice loud pops as the tires jump just pulling out of the driveway onto the trailer. I don't even like it for this race car!

I'm running a locker on a street driven 4x4 that I installed about 15 years ago. Off road, it's great. That's about 2% of the time. On the street, it's terrible. It pops, clunks, and does so with enough severity to cause lane changes when it's wet out. It caused me to wreck the truck shortly after I installed it, before I learned to push the clutch in while cornering. A mini-spool would be just as bad: unsafe and harsh on the street. Good for dirt track, but that's it.
