Different deal, Mike, you didn't start with anything less than an HO GT-37. Some cars deserve the expense. Same deal here, & when completed, nearly guaranteed not to see another real one at any large national show or drag event.

What gets me is them saying it's all original..... which it ain't. Lots of work done on that car just for new paint alone.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a very good looking car. But not worth what they're wanting for it.

yeah, my friend has a 72 chevelle ss that came with a 307 and now has a 454 and cowl hood, 12 bolt ect...he's ALWAYS claiming that it's 'All Original" and gets really pissed if you call him on it.

No - SS was available only on the 396 or 454.

Actually, the base engine in 1972 was a 2bbl 350. Some people say the 307 2bbl was the base engine, but there is no documented proof. I have a factory 350 2bbl car, it did not have the matching #'s drivetrain when I bought it - so I am building it to suit me. However, I will never claim that it is a "real" SS 454 car. But, the car did have a domed hood, round gauge dash, 12 bolt rear, etc. Without a build sheet though, it's hearsay.

Well I'll be darned. Learn something new every day. 350 2V was indeed the base Chevelle SS engine for 1971 and 1972.

Here's some pretty good SS info . . .

Never was much for the '70 & 71 "Chevelle SS's". Not unless they were known original 454 cars with a stack of original paperwork, too many local Malibus have been cloned into local showcar "SS Chevelles".

The real oddity in this era is the Malibu 400. anyone else ever run across a barebones '71 Malibu with a bump hood & its factory 400 SBC???

Yep - quite a few runnin' around Houston back in "the day". Prolly haven't seen one in well over 20 years, though.

Sounds good Mike. My plan when finished is to haul up your way to MI. Had several friends at last winters big indoor Vette & Musclecar show. Land of Lakes Musclecar Classic is another on my list.

years ago I examined a faded out gold original 71 Malibu 400 with a domed hood. Owner got it from his dad, dad ordered the car new... not an expert, just passing on what I saw.

Me either, thought it had to be optioned with the Heavy Chevy package to get a domed hood on a non SS car.
