New Owner of a 70 Lemans......Few Questions!!!
Hello! I just bought A 1970 Lemans Sport Coupe w/ a 350 motor, A/C, power steering, super clean, zero rust, only 48k miles, previously owned by a lil ole lady. Had it gararged for 40 years, bought, built, and driven locally. It's white w/ black vinyl top, black interior w/ buckets. The original interior is fully complete, and is in great shape. The only problem the car has is it currently isn't running. The lady said she was on her way back from the grocery store, and the egine just died out. Had it towed to her house, a friend of her's that was a mechanic thought it was the timing chain or gears broke. It then sat for 2 years, until I bought it yesterday. It's at my mechanics now getting diagnosed, hopefully it's a relatively easy fix. I bought it cheap so if it needs a engine rebuild I'll still be in good shape.
I want to decode the car, like the trim tag/engine/rear end/etc. I tried searching for a online resource but to no avail. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Also, some info I've seen has listed to different models, a 2dr coupe & 2dr hard top. What is the difference between the two? Maybe one has posts between the front & rear windows and one doesn't? Thanks in advance! Jason |

Welcome to the forums! You'll find all the information you requested just by doing a search within this site.
For example, here are a couple of threads I found for the dataplate decode when I did a search: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...rim+tag+decode http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...rim+tag+decode With regards to the engine VIN, again you can do a search on this site, but its to the left of the timing cover (when looking at the engine standing in front of the front bumper)... down low... easiest to see from below. - Here's a site that helps with the decode: http://www.tinindianperformance.com/...20decoding.htm The rear end has a two letter code stamped in the drivers side axle tube (usually), on the front side of the tube.... again, a search should pull up the codes and locations. This is a good site for codes:http://www.nh-gto.com/ Finally, there are some books worth buying that also have some info - there is the "GTO Red Book" which is no longer published but is available on CD, or you might be able to pick one up on ebay... it has a lot of codes in it, helpful when going to look at a car where the internet isn't readily available, however, these days, most of the codes are easy to find via a search of this site. THere is also the GTO Restoration manual, here: http://www.amazon.com/Pontiac-Restor...4443990&sr=8-1 Also a valuable resource. Finally, the factory assembly and body manuals for your car can also be available... these are reprinted and available on ebay for about $20-$30 each. BTW, let's see some pics!

Just post the first 6 digits of the VIN and the stamping of the trim tag and we can start from there. You could look for a build sheet for the car too. Or, sending $50 to PHS ( www.phs-online.com ) will get you the invoicing of the car.

Congrats !! That will be a fun car for you and I'll bet it looks good in white.
Could well be the original nylon timing gear if miles are that low... notorious for failing. If so, could be an easy fix and you will be back on the road soon. |

Thanks! I'm 100% certain it's the original timing gear, so my fingures are crossed.

If you got that cheap you got a deal. Probably nothing big why its not running but change the oil drain the gas before you start driving or starting it well the gas anyway.

looks like original black buckets late 69 build date ,thanksgiving car,are you sure the 880 is right ,these numbers should be for upper and lower body colors, if it was white from the factory it should be polar white code 10 I believe

I looked again and maybe the 880 is 380? And after that it does say 10 B.
