Default Installing 65 gto starter

What is correct procedure to install the starter. do you have to jack the motor up? i have tried putting mine on and the back end is hitting the frame where it crosses from side to side.

Jimmy, is there a stud for a cover on the front [front end of the car side]? If so you have to play with moving the starter around just right and it should go in. If you don't need that stud I think you can remove it and it should pop in real easy.

I had the same problem on my 66. Played with it for half an hour.... with cuss words and all. I did something just right and it popped right in. I got to thinking that if it came out with no problem it should go back in with no problem, but has to be moved around to end up with no problem.

There shouldn't be any difference from the 65 to 66 frame. I knew guys back in the 70s that used 65 frames under 66es, and 66 frames under 65s. If I'd been smart I could have used a 65 LeMans body on totaled out 66 GTO's good frame. 66 body was totally unusable.

No need to jack the motor up. Nose comes out last. Back drops down first. Try pushing up on the nose as you tilt the back downward.

Just a thought - is the support bracket on the front of the starter.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Once i pushed up the nose first and brought up the rear end it went right in. Once again thanks.

JH, even tho the stud is there on the starter, some have it and some don't.

Good to hear you got it in Jimmy.
