I just had to look. My 65 MPC shows 64-66 tempest the same with the return spring around the bearing fork, not thru he hole. I also saw diagrams of big cars using the hole in the fork. "Bill"!

Interesting I just checked my 65 service manual on the 6 cylinder it show from hole to hole but on the V8 as dId shows . well mine must be wrong and so is my 64 . I just had the tranny out of that and I know it's the same way and has been ever since I've owned it almost 38 years now . Sorry about the misinformation . I'm rebuilding the WS over the winter hopefully and will correct it when I put it back together .

I'm not sure your wrong. My car had that long spring on it when I got the car . But I did not pay much attention to it when I tore it down. When putting it back together the only spring I had with parts pile was that long ( hole to hole type) I could not get it on what looked to be correct. The car has the Gardner Exhaust on it and has the hole in flange but still did not work out . I got the type that I show out of the Ames or PY catalogue. that was described as correct???

X2 on the hole in the exhaust flange to secure the front of the spring (on my 64).
